How do you talk to someone about talking with their mouth full?

One of my close relatives constantly talks with her mouth full. It's awful. It's so embarrassing when we have guests. How do I have this conversation without upsetting her??

Do it yourself then apologise. 'Sorry shouldn't try and talk with my mouthful'.

Ask her something then apologise as she has her mouth full. 'Sorry I shouldn't ask when you've just taken a mouth full.'

Yeh, tried that for 30 years...plus the hum, huufff, noise...parents ate properly, my wife and her brother do...her sister , yuk, plus the food caught in the facial hair (I kid you not)

I say “ oh that’s ok finish what you’re eating first “ if I’m being polite

if it’s a close friend or family then I say something like “ that’s gross I can see all the food churning around in your mouth / don’t talk with your mouth full”

Not with your mouth full?

JumpstartMondays · 04/07/2024 22:47

My 3yo says it for me 😆 "eating first, then talking"

That tends to shut anyone up.

Do you have any children with you? You can always make a point of saying to one of them, “Remember, we don’t talk with our mouths full, it’s not nice for others to have to listen to”.

OP- we must be related. 🤔 You are describing my MIL!
Only last week she was eating a sausage roll and as she spoke, bits of pastry came flying out everywhere! I have tried timing asking a question when she doesn't have a mouthful. I've tried saying 'oh, wait till you have finished your mouthful' but nothing works and even DH has said 'Oh Mum, wait don't talk with food in your mouth'.

She also farts then pretends no one heard. I don't know what is worse.

Oh dear, very awkward. I had a close relative who did this frequently and it made me cringe. I couldn't say anything though because I knew that I would be made out to be in the wrong. In the end,I just tried to avoid being with them in an 'eating' environment.

My Dad's older brother (age 5) was told to empty his mouth before talking, so he spat his food onto his plate.

AMillionPeopleCheering · 05/07/2024 01:33

My DM always talks with her mouth full because she never finishes a bite before putting the next one in. Sometimes I have seen her actually quickly fill her mouth before she starts a long monologue. It's grim.

Just ask them to ‘say it, not spray it’ 😁

BogRollBOGOF · 05/07/2024 02:16

"Tell me when your mouth is empty"

Aquamarine1029 · 05/07/2024 03:52

It really is ok if people get upset sometimes. Talking with your mouth full of food is disgusting.

Crazycatlady79 · 05/07/2024 04:03

I'd just be blunt. I know that sounds unkind, but I don't think being gentle works here. 🫠

Gettingbysomehow · 05/07/2024 06:08

Tell them they look like a concrete mixer only more disgusting. That should do it. I am not a fan of subtle.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 05/07/2024 06:14

You don't. You just let people be who they are and get on with it. It's different if it's your child that you are raising, but you do not correct another adult, who, presumably, knows social convention and doesn't care. So, neither should you. Life's too short.

TeachesOfPeaches · 05/07/2024 06:27

If they're talking with food in their mouth just say 'sorry, I don't understand, I'll wait until you're finished'
