Worried about my 5 year old tonight

I’ve just been in to check on my 5 year old like I normally do before bed and I noticed one of his eyes is not completely closed, it’s partially open. Even though he’s asleep.
Is this something to be concerned about? I haven’t noticed it before. Of course my anxious brain leaps to the worst case scenario of a brain tumour or something.

He's fine. Kids can be creepy little turds who can sleep with both eyes open 😂

YouCanRingMyBellingham · 03/07/2024 23:28

I sleep with my eye or eyes open as do 3 of my children- not all the time but a few times a week

Hungrycaterpillarsmummy · 03/07/2024 23:28

Nah that's normal

Beamur · 03/07/2024 23:29

😂 apparently the creepy kid was me. Fast asleep but eyes wide open!

MigGirl · 03/07/2024 23:29

I've seen my kids do this, it does look a bit odd, bit totally normal.

SaulHudsonDavidJones · 03/07/2024 23:29

My DD always sleeps with her eyes slightly open. Looks freaky.

SmallGreatThings1 · 03/07/2024 23:29

My daughter does it all the time, don’t worry. It’s why I always have to check on her before bed - it freaks DH out!

Allywill · 03/07/2024 23:30

my husband does this. sometimes one eye sometimes both. i find it odd but it’s nothing to be worried about honest!

Changethesettings · 03/07/2024 23:32

Thanks for replies.I guess it’s because it’s just one eye and not the other, I read online it could be something to do with facial muscles which is why I panicked it was neurological.

Have you closed the eyelid?

Changethesettings · 03/07/2024 23:40

No I didn’t want to wake him

My DS does this! Sometimes they are both half open. When I was a child I very occasionally slept with both eyes wide open, I assume I closed them again at some point because I never woke up with dry eyes!

downday24 · 03/07/2024 23:46

You can gently close it

PoopingAllTheWay · 03/07/2024 23:48

If its something new, i would keep a very close eye on him

Please don’t. This would only be appropriate on a dead body, not a sleeping kid. Just leave him alone.

My labrador does this. He actually snores with his eyes open haha Didn’t know humans did it too 🤣

@HcbSS

why on Earth do you think it's 'not appropruate'???

BeanBeliever · 04/07/2024 00:02

My cousin’s children did this - now grown up and sleep with eyes closed as far as I know!

downday24 · 04/07/2024 01:04

Ok I mean , if you are worried then wake him to check it's sleep not drowsiness . Has he been unwell in any way?
There's no harm in closing an eyelid if you do not touch the eye but perhaps check he's ok first.

CowgirlGunburger · 04/07/2024 01:10

My DD sleeps with her eyes slightly open, looks a bit weird but nothing to worry about.

Changethesettings · 04/07/2024 05:32

@PoopingAllTheWay
Can I ask why to keep a very close eye on him? What could it mean please?

Funnywonder · 04/07/2024 05:42

My sister used to sleep with her eyes partially open. In fact, when he had a major operation at age 7, the surgeon told my parents afterwards that she, very unnervingly, had her eyes open throughout😆

Changethesettings · 04/07/2024 06:53

@PoopingAllTheWay
Also I’m not sure if it is a new thing or whether I just haven’t noticed it before.

Just wondering what the concern might be re: keeping a close eye on him.

Would you want someone prodding your eyes while you are asleep? Or touching you in any way? Or would you not prefer to just be left alone.

WellExactly2 · 04/07/2024 09:00

Totally normal. Don't worry!!

Changethesettings · 04/07/2024 09:39

@WellExactly2
I hope so, I just wonder what the PP meant when they said to keep a close eye on him.
