Please help! Birthday cake question…

really hoping someone can help! Basically, I’m on my period and sometimes at the start of my period I get an insane craving for birthday cake. Like the really sickly ones you used to get at birthday parties- the moist sponge, vanilla buttercream with jam in the middle type of cake (not fondant icing) I’ve tried buying a few supermarket birthday cakes but been really disappointed because they’re all so dry. Does anyone have any recommendations for a good birthday cake I could get to satisfy these cravings?? There’s a Costco in the nearest city I could drive to as apparently their sheet cakes are fab but I don’t have a card so I don’t know if I could even get in, and I also don’t know if they even sell them off the shelf or if it’s pre order only.

Please someone help me and recommend something lol I’m desperate for birthday cake

I live near all major supermarkets so can go to any, and I don’t care about price tbh I just want a really good cake

making my own is out of the question at the moment

Do you have any local cake makers you could find on Facebook? Maybe they could do you one and you could slice and freeze for the next few months?

FriendlyNeighbourhoodAccountant · 03/07/2024 14:46

Costco cakes are great. The buttercream icing is sugary and sweet and I often crave it too! You can preorder, or they sometimes have generic ones there too. I've only ever pre-ordered.

You'd need a membership though, might be worth seeing if you qualify for one.

Morrisons have started doing slices of cake and I'm sure one of them is birthday cake.

Another option might be a Farmhouse Inn type place that does the huge slices of cake that you can buy to take away.

Fudgetheparrot · 03/07/2024 14:49

Have you had a look on Uber eats/just eat for cake delivery places? There a lot near us and they often do “school cake” which is sponge with soft white icing and sprinkles (no jam tho)

Costco you need a card to get in. Do you know anyone with one as you can take a guest? I don’t like the icing on their flat cakes, it’s not nice, nor buttercream. Their other cakes are lush though!

Can you make one? It’s so easy!

Nah not able to make one at the moment unfortunately- we just moved house so no cooking facilities right now☹️

Thanks everyone!

tried the Morrisons single slice already but it was really dry- I’ll try again though in case I just got a bad one and maybe it’ll be better this time!

does anyone have any advice for a supermarket cake they’ve tried and liked that I could purchase today? Genuinely don’t even care if it’s Barbie, scooby doo, football etc whatever theme I don’t care just as long as it tastes good! The ones to order look good but I’m absolutely craving it today lol just so looking for a recommendation of a birthday cake someone has bought that was good that I could go and get in the shops today

thanks!

I understand you can't cook but could you get a standard Victoria sponge sandwich cake and some of the Betty Crocker buttercream icing (it almost hurts your teeth it's that sweet). Then either ice or yourself (Slap it on with a knife) or slather a bit on with every bite?

I haven't tried any but my go to would be M&S or booths if you have either nearby

Holidaaaaay · 03/07/2024 15:41

What about a regular cake and then a tub of Betty crocker chocolate spread icing stuff to add to it! That sounds delicious lol

rivertoskateaway · 03/07/2024 15:43

M&S cakes are the best I think! Just the normal iced vanilla sponge one.

EternallyIrked · 03/07/2024 15:43

I second a previous poster that Costco cake is the answer to your craving.
Some of the dessert shops round my way sell it by he slice, so it's worth asking round in case places near you do similar.

Do you have a costa - or any inde or other chain coffee shops - near you? I think the sort of cake you're craving could likely be found by the (giant!) slice?

Bearybasket · 03/07/2024 16:57

M&s rainbow cake is Gorgeous and would fit the bill I think or if you have any dessert takeaway type places near you they usually sell costco cake by the slice

Bearybasket · 03/07/2024 16:59

Buying a tub of pre-made buttercream, some nice jam and plain madeira loaf or similar might also be a no bake diy option if all else fails

Whataweirdsituation · 03/07/2024 17:02

I feel like the people on this post are my people ;)

Hadalifeonce · 03/07/2024 17:04

Fiona Cairns cakes at Waitrose have never disappointed.

Alwaystired23 · 03/07/2024 17:12

M&S for me. I always get birthday cakes from there. I find Asda, Tesco etc too dry ad well.

totk · 03/07/2024 17:16

M & S do a nice one with balloons on it - might hit the spot!

thesilver · 03/07/2024 17:20

Fiona Cairns from waitrose is my favourite. Also m & s rainbow cake or the mini gift cake sprinkle one.

MissyB1 · 03/07/2024 17:23

M&S definitely!
