Sending DS back to school after Covid

Alwayssomething14 · 02/07/2024 22:40

DS tested positive on 30/6 and stayed off school the last two days. He had symptoms for 2-3 days before the test which was immediately positive. NHS advise that tests are no longer necessary. If your child has mild symptoms and no temp then they can continue attending school/college. However, if you do test, try and avoid others for 3 days from the test. School policy is if child is well they can go in. My son is well with just a bunged up nose. All other symptoms have now gone (headache, sore throat, cough) .

I've now faced criticism about sending him back to school and was asked "wouldn't it help to stay off the rest of the week?" When I replied it wasn't necessary based on how he is and on advice, I was told that their child will be told to avoid mine! I'm so upset, whose out of order?

I wouldn’t send my kids

OptimismvsRealism · 02/07/2024 22:43

Well

Do you just do whatever you're told without thinking? The advice doesn't magic away the problem.

Some kids have family that can still die (horribly) of COVID so if you make the choice to send yours back to school why cant they make the choice to advice theirs to dodge him?

OptimismvsRealism · 02/07/2024 22:43

And "I'm so upset"? Why - do you think you get free will but no one else does?

CableCar · 02/07/2024 22:44

YANBU - COVID is here to stay, we are no longer in the hands/face/space phase and the majority of the nation will no longer bother testing. We are in the living with COVID phase... the person who complained is just going to have to live with it!

Now one thing I would love is if people actually honoured the 48 hour d&v rule!!

VivaLaSpag · 02/07/2024 22:45

how come you tested him?

Tel12 · 02/07/2024 22:48

Well no wonder we're in another wave. Some people become very unwell no matter what the official advice is. Personally I think that it's just sensible to keep anyone who has COVID away from others.

Theblondemum · 02/07/2024 22:49

What’s the point in testing now?! It’s just the same as every other virus out there if not milder! The whole Covid ‘pandemic’ one one big scam. Testing is pointless and means nothing

DrinkFeckArseBrick · 02/07/2024 22:51

It's totally fine to send him in. You're following advice. And he likely got it from there anyway. But it's also totally fine for someone to avoid your child because they have a virus that can kill vulnerable people. Maybe they have bad health. Maybe they have an ECV relative. Maybe they have a big event like an 80th birthday or a wedding coming up. Maybe they don't get paid when they're off sick caring for an ill child or off sick themselves. They told you about it so your child can understand and not get upset if their child avoids them which is them being straightforward and up front. Their child will probably forget anyway.

Alwayssomething14 · 02/07/2024 22:53

@OptimismvsRealism I'm fully aware of the point you make and have always been considerate. What I'm trying to get opinions on is why my choice is the wrong one when I'm following the advice. My son isn't sick, no more than another cold virus and very likely over the infectious stage. If NHS don't advise on testing anymore then I'm falling on my own sword by actually testing in the first place and being honest about it. Not everyone is doing either of those things, and let's face it, he caught it from someone in the first place.

NHS advice won't keep vulnerable people alive. I would be angry if I was stuck in a room with your kid and I'd try to avoid them as much as possible. I don't see why you'd be upset about that.

Thisismetooaswell · 02/07/2024 22:55

Just don't test. What difference does it make? You keep your child off when they are ill and send them back when they feel better - whatever they've had.

Alwayssomething14 · 02/07/2024 23:07

@Tel12 quite possibly because the advice is to no longer test. There's criticism if we test and if we don't. If I hadnt tested him, but still kept him in the last 3 days as I have done, waiting until symptoms passed, I would be sending him in tomorrow as he is much better, none the wiser as to whether it was covid or not.

OP posts:
HcbSS · 02/07/2024 23:12

I would not have tested him so he would have been in Monday unless too unwell to go.

DancingPhantomsOnTheTerrace · 02/07/2024 23:13

I don't really understand why you tested. I understand why some people do, but the results don't seem to have made any difference to your behaviour so why bother?
That's not a criticism, if my child had a headache and a sore throat I wouldn't test them. I don't know anyone who would.

SonicTheHodgeheg · 02/07/2024 23:15

Why did you tell people it was Covid ?
Why did you test ?

Next time just say he was ill.

flumposie · 02/07/2024 23:17

@Theblondemum covid left me unable to walk properly without the aid of a walking stick. Other virus did not... so ignorant when people have been left with long covid symptoms

Ozanj · 02/07/2024 23:21

You need to discuss return with the school. All medical advice on the NHS website is ONLY for healthy people without pre-existing conditions. You have no idea if someone your child interacts with has cancer / a parent with cancer or another condition that would make covid deadly. Most schools have the same policy for covid as they have for flu for that reason - off for a week. Sometimes 2 if there’s someone at risk in the class.

DinnaeFashYersel · 02/07/2024 23:23

If yout child is well you send him your school.

If not you keep him home.

A bunged up nose is no reason to keep him home.

Alwayssomething14 · 02/07/2024 23:27

@Ozanj I've checked. No policy. If child is well enough to return then it's fine.

My point here is that I've actually done everything I'm supposed to. Tested if thought it was a possible infection, stayed at home for 3 days, checked the school policy, absolutely certain he is now only mildly affected.

@flumposie
I'm really sorry you have been so badly affected. I'm not ignorant, I've followed advice and my own gut instinct on this one. He is well.

Fingerscrossedfor2021HK · 02/07/2024 23:28

Oh good lord! The only unreasonable thing on your part was to let anyone know it was Covid. Not sure how all of these allegedly highly vulnerable people survive the usual cold and flu / d&v / general bugs!

At this point Covid is less serious that many of the above and if they are vaxxed they shouldn’t be badly affected anyway. I had it at 8 months pregnant and my OB said it wasn’t a risk.

People who are genuinely at risk from Covid should protect themselves by wearing an N95 mask and the rest of us need to get on with life. Stay home if horribly unwell, obviously stay away from the very old / young / sick and just use common sense (as you have done)!

It is helpful for small children to catch common viruses like Covid or their immune systems suffer. You know, like they did after lockdowns, as scientists have confirmed was the case?!

Theblondemum · 03/07/2024 08:16

flumposie · 02/07/2024 23:17

@Theblondemum covid left me unable to walk properly without the aid of a walking stick. Other virus did not... so ignorant when people have been left with long covid symptoms

Could it be possible this was because of the vaccine not covid??!!

FrenchandSaunders · 03/07/2024 08:19

Why did you test and why did you then tell everyone it was covid?

Pipecleanerrevival · 03/07/2024 08:22

You’re damned if you do and damned if you don’t. Do what you think is right and don’t share any information unless you have to. And stop testing. People get weird when you say ‘Covid’ instead of ‘sick’

Alwayssomething14 · 03/07/2024 10:51

@FrenchandSaunders I've well and truly learnt from my mistake. Thought others would trust my own judgement but I was very wrong. Won't be testing or sharing this kind of information in future that's for sure !

@Pipecleanerrevival exactly. Learnt the hard way unfortunately!
