Please tell me where to live near Birmingham Airport

Dh and I have come to realise that we can no longer afford to live in the South. I will occasionally need to come down for work to London but with kids entering their teen years I’m quite happy to sit on the train for an hour and a half. Can stay with my brother if needed or book a hotel when I’m working in London. My company also has an office in Birmingham but my team are not based there.

My mother lives with us right now as she is recently widowed, chances are she will continue to live with us as having her to help around the house has actually been a massive help and enabled me to go for a promotion with more responsibilities.

I don’t want to be out in a very rural village. Right now we are in a village but it’s the first village you hit as you leave our town. Perfect in my eyes. Would love something similar. Ideally a train station as I enjoy eating out, shopping and going to live events with dh and dc. We have dogs so we spend a fair bit of time in the countryside also.

DH is a pilot so needs to be able to get to the airport.

Budget will be around £900,000.

Any suggestions would be so helpful. Just had a look on rightmove and became very overwhelmed. DC and I have stayed in an Airbnb in the area for a fortnight when DH was working out of Birmingham airport for a few months. But we have no other connection to the area.

Try Coleshill, my cousin lives there and is about 10 or 15 mins. Bit of a mess at present due to HS2, but that will be all over in a few years

Hampton in Arden.

lovely village, has a train station, but also very close to B’ham airport and international rail station and resorts world (the NEC) for live events etc.

Only downside is There’s lots of work going into HS2 nearby

With that sort of money you could find something very acceptable in Solihull and its environs. I don't think you'd have a problem at all. I'd avoid the flight path, personally.

Coleshill? You'd struggle to spend £900k in Coleshill.

How close does your husband have to be to the airport?

MultiplaLight · 02/07/2024 21:09

Yeah you won't really get a 900k house in Coleshill unless you go to the surrounding villages, but that defeats the point. You could have a very nice place for. 500k but probably not the high st and transport connections you'd expect.

I'd head towards Solihull, Knowle or even nice parts of Shirley.

Thanks for suggestions. Adding to excel sheet.

DH doesn’t mind a max of a 30/40 min drive. Often he finishes in the early morning and too long a drive is just not doable.

You could go quite far with 30-40 minutes.

Moseley and King heath might give you more of a Southern High Street vibe, but make husbands commute longer.

Will you need schools?

Purplebunnie · 02/07/2024 21:16

Dorridge is lovely

TheMousePipes · 02/07/2024 21:16

Dorridge. Easy commute for your dh to the airport, a stop on the chiltern line into Marylebone or into Birmingham for nights out. Nice bars, decent restaurants in close striking range. Gorgeous park to walk the dogs and on the edge of the countryside out towards Lapworth and surrounds. Your budget will stretch so long as you’re not looking for something enormous,

Dorridge definitely, station and lovely.

Henley-in-Arden

Equally the outer edge of Solihull around Widney Manor Station

30/40 minutes would also incorporate other areas with stations nearby like Kenilworth, Warwick or Stratford-upon-Avon.

Bromsgrove (market town at bottom
Of M42)
Barnt Green (footballers wives type village between Bromsgrove and Birmingham)
Hagley (nice village further west - has direct train to Bham and access to countryside)
Leamington Spa (easy access for Birmingham and route back to London)
Hope that helps!

countbackfromten · 02/07/2024 21:44

Solihull is lovely, great transport links, easy to get to the airport and a range of brilliant schools. Plus some gorgeous countryside close by!

BrumBrumBum · 02/07/2024 21:50

Solihull
Dorridge
Dickens Heath if you like newer builds

PicaK · 02/07/2024 21:50

Barnt Green, Blackwell, Alvechurch, Knowle, Dorridge - all lovely places to live

maryberryslayers · 02/07/2024 21:59

Barston, Hampton Lane/Catherine De Barnes, Hampton in Arden, Knowle, Dorridge, Warwick Road leading in to Solihull, lots of beautiful houses on most of the roads leading in to the centre of Solihull. You'll get something decent for your money.

HereComesDecember · 03/07/2024 08:00

Also came to say Dorridge! As above, train station direct to London, good schools, about 20 mins to airport and good transport links for both Solihull and Birmingham for you and teens.
