The house behind us has been vacant for about 18 months. We got notification that it had been sold and planning permission had been given for a massive extension which will bring a 2 storey extension to within a few meters of our rear fence.

We put in every complaint and objection that we could but to no avail.

Their bedroom window will look directly into our full length patio door living area and give full view of our garden.

AIBU to behave so badly and encourage our children and pets to do the same that the builders will tell them we are crazy and they should rethink the position of their window !

Some early ideas - develop loud vocal tics when in the garden, some exhibitionism at the windows. Children to repeatedly kick balls over fence. Hang weird satanic Blair witch effigies from the tree and possibly some stuffed animals with fake blood.

Any other suggestions ? They have a small child apparently!

A big bright search light aimed at the proposed bedroom widow. It could be flashing intermittently.

Your post made me smile, l know that it's not funny for you. l thought that it was illegal to build an extention with window overlooking your neighbours.
Definitely nude sunbathing although it can't be too often with british weather !

Have you ever lived on a housing estate, everybody’s houses look into each other gardens, window etc?

LunaTheCat · 04/07/2024 03:58

It’s time for your children to take up a musical instrument- I would suggest the drums and a violin- plus you have a lifelong dream to play the bagpipes don’t you OP? 😉

HmmWhatNameToHave · 04/07/2024 05:44

Wind chime positioned just under their window

Callingoctopus · 04/07/2024 20:55

Hmmm... People saying they only look out of their upstairs window when seeing to the curtains, I think when we all lived in rooms that were for their purpose ie bedroom for sleeping, living room for watching telly etc. This might have been true, at one time, however with the advent of wi fi in every room and working from home this is now not the case. My neighbours adult kid has his desk facing the window which overlooks our small shitty garden, the only bit that gets the sun is right in their eyeline and he sits there all day every fucking day. So if I want to sit outside and enjoy the sun I have to feel him staring straight at me FFS.

Are you trying to say that those things are frowned upon in neighborhoods?

{Goes to tell DH that tonight's "planting" will need to be postponed, along with the garden party with the church group AND our weekly date}

There goes our fun.....😆 😎

Just the bodies bit, the rest is fine. Don’t let neighbours ruin your fun 😂

Platypuslover · 04/07/2024 23:56

How the hell did that get permission?! A bit of casual bribery or nepotism?

Whew! I was worried there for a minute. Will miss the plantings though. Just went and bought several endangered plants the other day, so that it would be illegal to dig them up or disturb them. Seems to work well. 😉😆🌱

I feel for you, OP. In France it's illegal to install a window overlooking someone else's garden. If there's no way around it, they have to use frosted glass. Quite right too.

France yes they are clever and subtle with it

MrsSlocombesCat · 05/07/2024 12:39

I honestly couldn’t get upset about this. Like others have said, they’re highly unlikely to be constantly at the window staring at you.

Cathyq · 05/07/2024 12:57

Slothonarope a giant vivarium next door to me would be enough for me to put my house up for sale. 😂

CactusMactus · 05/07/2024 12:59

Wind chimes. And talk to your plants loudly when you are gardening.

1mabon · 05/07/2024 14:24

They had planning permission so there isn't anything you can do about it. There is no need to behave so badly, you will be a neighbour from hell, all you want is revenge - nasty.

Workoutinthepark · 05/07/2024 14:27

Adviceneeeeded · 02/07/2024 19:40

You can buy those things to go on your glass which means you can see out and don't lose light but they can't see in. I can't remember what they are called

Way less hilarious but far more practical solution 😄

Crazycatlady79 · 05/07/2024 14:34

@ASBONEIGHBOURS I appreciate that your post is heavily tongue-in-cheek, however did it really not occur to you that writing something like "..develop loud vocal tics when in the garden" might actually be frigging offensive, rather than amusing, to people whose conditions mean "loud vocal tics" are a lived, unavoidable reality?! 🤔

Boolya · 05/07/2024 19:49

Please , no Leylandii

Fiddlybells · 05/07/2024 19:58

They painted huge “Stop the War” (this was 20 years ago…) banners in Arabic on sheets that they hung on their house. The builder eventually coughed up for new mature trees after the house failed to sell for a year.

@BobandRobertaSmith 🤣🤣🤣

dawngreen · 05/07/2024 21:59

Next Swampy will be making a home in a tree in your garden. The Revolution is coming 😎

Sadly any screening will block out the small but of sunlight we get in the mornings.

Can you train cats to poop in someone's garden ??

You are quite mad!

NavyTurtle · 07/07/2024 09:14

ASBONEIGHBOURS · 02/07/2024 19:51

Don't care about the extension - they have the option of putting the upper floor window facing sideways instead of over our garden.

Here in Ireland in the country you cannot build so that windows are overlooking other people's personal space. It's different in the towns on roads and estates. My solution, move to rural Ireland. So peaceful.

Am I missing something?I used to be able to see clearly into all the side and rear neighbours gardens and houses from upstairs windows in a normal terraced house.

Isn’t this normal unless you live in a detached with loads of surrounding land?

I’ve lived in terraced and semi’s in a big town and never had this. I think newer builds are worse for it but older properties always had privacy!
