Is it time to get rid of politicians?

This whole election process, here, in America and France has been an appalling advert for democracy. I despair of these politicians who want my vote but don't seem able to tell me what exactly they believe. I have watched my local hustings, read their leaflets and websites but am still undecided. I do however think that King Charles seems OK. Trustworthy, does a lot for charity, he cares about the environment. Has democracy failed and is it time to go back to being governed by the monarchy???

So you want to live in a country ruled by a dictator?

Whothefuckdoesthat · 02/07/2024 10:39

I do like the royal family but no.

I’m a big fan of not living in a dictatorship and, as crap as they are, MP’s are part of that.

OonaStubbs · 02/07/2024 10:41

Politicians are fairly useless I agree. But I'm not sure an absolute monarchy is the answer. The solution should just be just to get better politicians.

RedOrBlueOrYellow · 02/07/2024 10:41

You want a dictatorship? What could possibly go wrong!

Captainmycaptains · 02/07/2024 10:43

Ahem, no thanks. Imagine be actually governed by that thicko… democracy isn’t always tidy but it sure as hell is better than any dictatorship

And if Charles had had a tragic accident in his 20s, you'd be ok with Andrew?

Never ever choose a system where you don't have a say.

Roguebludger · 02/07/2024 11:02

He seems nicer than the politicians. How do we get better politicians then??

I think there are some excellent MPs out there who are motivated by a desire to serve their constituencies. Unfortunately you only usually hear about those if they're your local MP. The ones who make the national headlines are those who are in the job to use it to enrich themselves and inflate their egos.

bridgetreilly · 02/07/2024 11:13

It’s not just about good and bad politicians now. We have ended up with a political system which is fundamentally broken. We will always get more of the same, and the few who really are trying to make positive changes end up frustrated and disillusioned. We need something to disrupt the system. Not Charles, but something.

Donkeyokay · 02/07/2024 11:15

We need to scrap first past the post.

Aposterhasnoname · 02/07/2024 11:18

Jesus, I’m the biggest royalist going but that’s got to be the most insane take I’ve ever heard.

BMW6 · 02/07/2024 11:19

Charles is fine but what if a future monarch is a psychopath??

As shit as politicians individually can be I genuinely believe that the system we have here in UK is as good as it can be.

We get rid of nutters like Liz Truss quickly and without a lot of fuss. We would never have to endure a Trump.

Experts in fields, rather than parasites in palaces.

That would be a good step. No one having a safe seat means they would make more effort or leave the House.

The OP'S idea is ludicrous but I need to point out that if The King died, his son William is next in line. After him, it's William's children, in order of birth (George, Charlotte, Louis).

This whole election process, here, in America and France has been an appalling advert for democracy - translates as the US and France may not vote how you think they should, therefore the answer is to get rid of politicians.

pinkspeakers · 02/07/2024 11:36

You are being beyond unreasonable. I think we should work to make democracy work better. I certainly don't want to live in a dictatorship!!

Exactly, according to Google Charles was 33 when William was born.

I thought we were talking about NOW, not history. The title of the thread is, "Is it time to get rid of politicians?"

But that's the point, we'd be making that change and wouldn't be able to change it back. If George ends up more Andrew than Charles, that's who we'd get.

Choosing monarchy over democracy because you like one person is utterly ridiculous.
