Hospital bills abroad

Not really a aibu but interested in thoughts on this…My sister lives abroad, in France. She has been there about 6 years or so, before Brexit, and she is a resident there. She works, and thus gets most healthcare covered but she also has an insurance thing for health.
A friend of hers recently had a major health issue and was taken to hospital where he spent a couple of weeks in intensive care, and is still recovering in hospital now, around 2 months later. He is English, lived there about 10 years but has no residency or insurance. By all accounts that makes him illegal! The hospital bills are mounting up and as he has no insurance, who would pay? My sister says he will be deported back to UK. Is that right?

The guidelines here state the importance of having health insurance for France.

There are special arrangements for people whom were resident in France prior to 2021 under the withdrawal agreement. The "friend" may have the opportunity to fill out forms retrospectively.
However this isn't really any of your business unless the relationship between this person and your sister is more than just friendship!
