Is the Monarch above the law? Can they be prosecuted if they break the law?

Thinking about what the Supreme Court has said about the US Presidency and how they can be immune from prosecution for certain acts if they are carried out in an official capacity.

Can our Monarch be prosecuted?

Lots of guesswork here.

LakeTiticaca · 01/07/2024 18:56

Perhaps he could hire someone to do it for him.........................🤫🤫

Elleherd · 01/07/2024 18:58

Putting · 01/07/2024 18:52

Or just get someone to send him off with a speedball, like they did with George V

Allegedly his death being announced in the "less appropriate evening journals” was a consideration as to the timing.

So can potentially I could get the king to do a hit on some-one and get away with it. Hmmm...
🤔

The ultimate hit man perhaps.

On January 21 1977 princess Anne, then 26, was fined £40 at Alfreton Magistrates in Derbyshire for doing 96mph in a 70mph limit on the M1. On October 22 1990 she was fined £150 and banned from driving for one month by magistrates in Stow-on-the-Wold, Gloucestershire, after admitting two speeding offences.

Grapesichord · 01/07/2024 19:02

Also fined for speeding this year I think

Because she's a princess royal, not the monarch.

Princess Anne seems to be the habitual speeder in the family. After having been previously warned for speeding in 1972, she has been prosecuted and fined for the offence in 1977, 1990 and 2001. For the 1990 offence, she also had her driving licence suspended for a month.
The highest speed appears to have been in 2001, which was 93mph in a 70mph zone.
Her daughter Zara seems to have the same addiction, and has been fined and banned from driving for various speeding offences (and I think her son-in-law has had a drink-driving ban).

Grapesichord · 01/07/2024 19:06

Also Charles was fined for speeding before he was King

Grapesichord · 01/07/2024 19:08

Princess Royal (Princess Anne). Her dog was not on a leash when it attacked and bit two children in 2002. The Princess Royal was charged with being in charge of a dog that was dangerously out of control in a public place, under the Dangerous Dogs Act. The maximum penalties for the offence is a fine of up to £5,000, six months in prison, and the destruction of the dog.
HRH pleaded guilty to the charge and was subsequently fined £500, ordered to pay £500 compensation to the two victims, and to pay £148 in court costs. Her dog was spared.

LakeTiticaca · 01/07/2024 19:10

Yes it's true Anne is the only Royal to have a criminal record up to now........😉

Waiting for the next Jodi Taylor CoSM or TP novel after this thread.

Oh dear! She’s now gone right down in my level of respect for her.
That sort of driving doesn’t demonstrate any care and consideration for other people’s lives. Either that or she’s just a bit thick and I need to take my rose tinted glasses off.

I’m not sure any of the royal family are going to win prizes for their intelligence tbf

bridgetreilly · 01/07/2024 19:57

You get tried by your peers. But the king has no peers, so no trial. Unless we have another civil war…

Not that this is an excuse for speeding, but she would have had additional driver training. Certainly after the kidnap attempt and back in the 80’s. I know Catherine did.

No, it isn’t an excuse for speeding.

It just goes to show that the extra effort given to teaching her how to drive properly was a waste of time and money.

It is not ok to drive at 93 mph.

LlynTegid · 01/07/2024 21:59

I'm not sure.

But Tory Prime Ministers who commit treason seem to be.

not really, it’s like any insurance policy, a waste until you need it. Wouldn’t be a waste of money if she needed to use evasive driving.

I’ve done some of the training they would have done, it is the same high speed training the police get, so in theory she would be safer at higher speeds than a normal driver. Thats not an excuse though as she wasn’t in danger.
