Does anyone else suffer from weird visual trailing?

Allofaflutter · 01/07/2024 17:47

About 4 weeks ago I started having weird visual trailing. By this I mean at times, not all the time, when I see something for example my hand in front of my face as it moves I see like trails or like the outline of the hand where it had been like it’s lagging behind like a shadow. It’s both eyes and only really when I’m tired. No pain just weird trailing. Saw dr who was unsure, sent me to specsavers, they said nothing on the scans, so now I’m having a head CT this week. I’m really worried. Anyone else have this?

Having my head ct today. They called me Monday and offered me a cancellation at short notice which is fab.

I was also going to suggest migraines. Sounds similar to how mine used to start, just mine would progress into a painful one.

newmyname · 03/07/2024 10:14

It happens to me when I've been awake too long

Fraaahnces · 03/07/2024 10:14

Could also be optical migraines. Get your BP checked. If you are on oral contraceptives you may need to swap to another form as there is an increased risk of stroke.

I was prescribed the mini pill rather than the pill when I mentioned migraines

Do you take topiramate or any other medications? I have this, it started after I started taking topiramate.

If it helps ease any worries, I have a brain tumour and this was not a symptom of that - it didn't start until I started the topamax. I also had similar but not exactly the same when having migraines as a teen.

It's called "palinopsia" apparently!

Hope it went smoothly

Allofaflutter · 03/07/2024 21:47

It went fine as far as I know. They found my brain which is always good news lol! 😂

I’m really sorry to hear that. Thank you for reassuring me. I hope you are recovering. X

Blood pressure was 107/75 so not worrying. Thank you all for the support. 🥰

Yes! I sometimes get this.. kind of like clear black smoke floating past my vision briefly. I had an MRI on my brain recently (suspicion of MS) and they’ve not got back to me yet which they said they wouldn’t for a while unless they found something.

the other suspicion was optical migraines so I’m pretty sure it’s that now.

I’m hoping it’s migraines for us both. X

If I’m waiting at a junction where cars are passing in front of me, the passing cars will have a pale shadow following behind and slightly above them. It’s always been that way and I’ve never found out why.

It’s always when I’m tired and very first thing in the morning.

I get this when i'm extremely sleep deprived, which is often. I work 13 hour nights and have a toddler. If I have to get up for work after 2-4 hours sleep its really bad, almost like a double vision of everything.

I’ve not slept through for three years now - perimenopause. Seems unfair, kids are adults now but I’m waking 9 times a night.

https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/retinal-migraine/

It 'might' be an ocular/retinal migraine or something else. I get these, but maybe only 2/3 times a year. Mine come on suddenly with a warped, zig-zag effect on my right side of vision. They normally last less than 15mins, and sometimes I get a mild headache after, generally also lasting less than 15mins.
I started a diary to see if there was a trigger- so when I'd get one, I'd record time of day, how long it lasted, did I get a headache afterwards, where I was in my cycle, was I wearing contacts or glasses, any meds or illness at the time. I found absolutely no correlation with menstrual cycles and the only thing vague connection was being more stressed.
I hope everything is clear and it resolves.

Retinal migraine

Find out about retinal migraine, a type of migraine that affects 1 eye, causing temporary vision loss and other eye symptoms.

Both my eyes are affected so probably not retinal migraines but I appreciate the help.

Oh I notice that sometimes. I get lots of weird migrainesque things and have done since I was a teenager on and off. Had my eyes checked out loads of times (last time by a lovely person who said they were determined to find a reason for my symptoms and who put it down to migraine in the end) and stopped stressing about sinister explanations ages ago. I hope your scan is fine but would be surprised if anything was wrong OP.

alittlequinnie · 03/07/2024 22:33

I read your post and came on to say perimenopause. I've got a friend at work who described this exactly and it was one of her menopause symptoms. She's 66 now and doens't get it any more!

Allofaflutter · 03/07/2024 22:38

I’m early 50’s and def perimenopausal.

I’m sorry to hear that, my dr was baffled to be honest. Suggested migraines but I have no pain.

You can get a migraine without pain!
With aura migraines some people have the visual disturbance and that all.
