"When fascism comes to America, it will come wrapped in the flag and waving the cross.”

This basically gives a US President the right to do anything as an "official act".

Have you read up on Project 2025? Expect it to be worse now.

The lunatics are finally in control of the asylum.

Trump celebrates immunity case ruling; liberal supreme court judge says president now ‘a king above the law’ – live

As terrifying as his skin colour. Having said that, Charles is exempt from a load of laws. But Charles doesn't have the power Trump potentially has.

DeftLemonDog · 02/07/2024 12:14
  1. Justice Sonia Sotomayor, in a dissenting opinion, warned that a consequence of the ruling is that “the President is now a king above the law”. The decision “makes a mockery of the principle, foundational to our Constitution and system of government, that no man is above the law”, she added.

What have the six Supreme Court Justices done? I don’t even know how to talk about this. From today, a US President cannot be held to account for anything he/she does while in office.

Where does the US go from here? Fuck.

When Trump said he would be a dictator on day 1?

This is enabling it.

He can do almost anything he likes.

It's the age-old question, what do you do if you believe in democracy but a democracy votes itself into a dictatorship? If you believe in democracy you have to accept the end of democracy.

It's not just an American problem either. In three days the UK will have a Labour supermajority which is a Starmer dictatorship by consent.

The trouble with democracy is that every stupid fucker has a vote, as they say.

Problem is with Starmer's majority is that all those objecting to it were crowing about Boris's landslide.

And the problem with Landslides is that you have about 100 days to use it to make a difference. Then it starts to come apart.

This is different in the US. Trump can do anything he likes and not be impeached.

@Dotjones you've really swallowed the Tory propaganda hook line and sinker haven't you? There won't be a supermajority and the term is meaningless in UK politics anyway.

OP, it's absolutely terrifying. I agree.

Don't be so ridiculous. Labour can be voted out at the next election if the public so wish.

Starmer doesn't have immunity to commit whatever crimes he likes while in office.

This US ruling is terrifying. By this logic Biden could take out Trump and the six justices and face no consequences (I'm not suggesting he should by the way).

Well done RBG, this is now your legacy.

Why is it RBG's legacy? If she had gone during the Obama administration the Reps would have blocked a replacement anyway!

Only in the last two years of his presidency.

She could have stepped down prior to 2014 (and there were calls for her to do so at that time).

Aladdinzane · 02/07/2024 12:39

No one could have foreseen this, and they may have stopped him appointing in the last term anyway.

The fact is the Republicans are corrupt as fuck.

The Democrats had control of the Senate and judiciary prior to the 2014 mid terms. It was the obvious time for her to step down so that Obama could secure a liberal judge to replace her, but she took an extremely irresponsible gamble that has backfired massively.

Kovus · 02/07/2024 13:06

There is a material difference between Trump and King Charles / Keir Starmer.

No one could have foreseen that Trump would be able to appoint 3 SCJs in his 4 years either though.

I think blaming RBG is a bit much

Well Trump has been described as a King above the law and we have a King above the law so I don't see much difference. Starmer isn't prime minister so I'm not sure why he's being mentioned.

Kovus · 02/07/2024 14:48

Character wise I think there are material differences.

It's obviously not entirely her fault, but hers was an incredibly short sighted (possibly narcissistic, or maybe naive?) decision that has tarnished her legacy in the opinion of plenty of Americans.

She was 81 and far from a picture of health in 2014. How many windows of opportunity did she think a Democrat president, with a majority in the senate, would have to replace her? Hanging on til death was a massive gamble, and it's not clear to me who benefitted other than herself.
