Political letter from my gp telling who to vote for

FluffyJellyCat · 01/07/2024 17:11

Is this even allowed? The gp isn't wrong in what he is saying. But how did he get my personal data to write to me? It's a proper letter addressed to me at my address. Could he access my data for a local election?

Conflict of interest? Gdpr? I'm not going to complain because I have enought going on in my life. But surely this isn't allowed?

What next? The schools head telling me who to vote for?

What does it say, I'm guessing it was sent to all patients, they have names and addresses on the computer. What a waste of manpower, time, money and this is not what a gp should be doing. No wonder the NHS is in a crisis. I'd complain to your health authority for wasting resources. How ironic if the letter mentions the NHS, doctors hours and lack of money, the media would have a field day.

They would not be permitted to access patient records for this type of communication.

It's strange how it's the same usernames stoking the flames of ignorance in multiple threads.

AutumnCrow · 02/07/2024 20:02

OP, did the letter have an imprint?

Eh?

I showed the letter to dh and he's pointed out that the gp is,saying he is a local gp, he's not writing to me as MY gp so it's general election drumming up votes for his favourite party.

It's who I'm voting for.

I still don't want to know my gps voting habits. My mate is gp and I'm fine hearing anything she to say on anything as a human being. Can't say why buy my gp is not my mate. He is in position of power over me? I don't want to know who he supports in the polls. He can rant as much as he likes about the state of the nhs, fine. But don't lecture me on politics.

Anyway it seems the info must have come from the electoral role, not his practice database.

You don't have to do what your GP says.
It's not like he knows who you vote for and it's not going to affect your care.

Thistlewoman · 02/07/2024 18:15

Your GP is bang out of order. He is not supposed to use your personal details for anything other than the purpose for which he has them - i.e. medical matters. This is a serious breach-and you should report him. It sounds as if he has no concept of the legal restrictions on him regarding use of personal data-and no recognition of appropriateness or boundaries-which is NEVER a good thing in a GP. Report him and change doctor.

As has been explained numerous times the GP would not have used the patient data.

FluffyJellyCat · 02/07/2024 21:26

Well I'm voting for his party anyway so he's not telling me what do. I think my dyslexic brain read "I am wtiting as a local gp" as "I'm writing as YOUR local gp" so I have been a bit dim. I blame the dyslexia.

It's a village. He's everyone's GP. The the 'your gp' is key I guess

I still don't like.

but at least he isn't bigging up Nigel Farage as I'd be googling my my own medical interventions from now on.

So, you didn't read and understand it properly, needed someone to explain it to you and now you are moaning because you don't want to know how he votes?

iamtheblcksheep · 01/07/2024 17:27

How can they possibly even know. All politicians lie through their teeth to get elected. Let’s be honest. She’s been told to vote for labour.

The tactics being used to influence the vote are starting to cross the line

When did OP say Labour?

I don't want him writing to my as my gp about politics. His letter is long and I can decide how I vote with the billion leaflets I get. I don't need his greater intellectual abilities telling me how to think. He is still my gp. He is everyone's gp in this village and the neighbouring villages. I think it's an abuse of power. My dentist could write to me telling me to vote for UKIP and I wouldn't give a shit. Because he is a private business man. My gp isn't. The same for it is was from the local head who is a civil servant. I cant do stuff like this in my public body role. In fact I have to declare I don't yearly so yes it's pissed me off.

I won't do anything about my feelings but yes I'm going to judge my gp in a bad light over it.

Will he know and if he did would he care? I highly doubt it.

What if it was Farage? In this situation would that be OK? Even if I find Farage an offensive thick prick who demonised families like mine?

In the letter he says don't vote for xyz as they will never get a seat locally. That's the condescending patronising tone to the local village idiots from the village god.

Well I don't feel quite that strongly obviously but generally he can piss off. Even if he is right. If I want to waste my vote on on outsider I will. Most people know who can't win local seats, they are protest votes.

Onetoffeetin · 02/07/2024 22:03

No I don't believe your GP should do this. GDPR aside, they should be impartial and not using their position to influence voters. I work in the NHS and we are told this in pre-election periods. It used to be called Purdah and applies mostly to civil servants but we're advised to follow the same principle and not abuse our position.

This is quite a bizarre reaction. I don't think many people give the local GP the amount of power you do or see them as as significant a community leader as you seem to.

It isn't an abuse of power in the least. He isn't in a position of power to abuse.

ellenfan · 02/07/2024 22:21

OP, a GP is not a civil servant. If you don't like the leaflet, just put it back in the recycling.

ellenfan · 02/07/2024 22:24

@FluffyJellyCat That's the condescending patronising tone to the local village idiots from the village god.

But maybe it's not. Maybe you're reading things into it that other people just wouldn't see.

Nobody can make you feel small without your permission.

You get to make your own choice on Thursday, whatever it will be.

mitogoshi · 02/07/2024 22:37

We got a leaflet about education today, it came unnamed, doesn't even say who to vote for just about the huge cuts over the last few years! Well I'm voting labour anyway, always do.

Nipsmum · 03/07/2024 11:53

Just ignore it. If you don't like it tear it up and put it on the bin. Job done. Think no more about it. It is not worth raising your blood pressure for.

Crikeyalmighty · 03/07/2024 11:54

Outrageous- regardless of who he supports

He won't be the only GP in the constituency, just as your village is not the only village in the constituency. It's just a coincidence that the GP endorsing the candidate happens to be your GP.

We were persuaded by the union to vote labour in the 90s (I was Tory) to keep social services homes opened, what happened they got in and we were shut down one by one after millions to upgrade the homes (voting Reform this time around)

Thank goodness someone is voting for this private company to run the country. I’ve heard Tice is nearly out of cash from bankrolling it (the ‘joining fees’ ran out). The more votes Farage gets the more likely they are to get tax payer funding so Farage can not attend Parliament like he didn’t bother to attend EU committees just claimed every penny he could - must be very hard up. You’d think his family all having German passports would give him some better opportunities. Oh well. Poor soul.

MineIsALemonFanta · 03/07/2024 20:02

Over-stepping definitely.
Our vicar gave a sermon recently about who we should vote for - not by name, but it was thinly veiled. I did feel he was overstepping as well.

Many clergy do this. Especially when taking the angle of compassion towards the poor and refugees. Entirely reasonable IMO

What is Reform’s policy on social care?
