I did an endurance run as part of a team last night.
It involved running as a team for 24 hour so had to do a couple of hours overnight.
It was raining. I probably wasn't dressed for it as I thought it would be dry.

I've not been able to get warm or stop shivering for the last 18 hours. I couldn't sleep (camping) as I was a mixture of high on adrenaline and absolutely freezing.
I'm home now, had fluids, food , vitamin C tablets, hot shower and have a blanket wrapped round me. Still shivering.
I'd like to get right if possible for the morning.
What is this? Any recommendations?

You definitely need to get your temperature taken. You might have hypothermia or you might have a fever - but the treatment for those things is completely different. For example, you should take paracetamol for a fever, but you should absolutely not take paracetamol for hypothermia. Essentially, if you have hypothermia you need to do things to bring your body temperature up, whereas if you have a fever you need to do things to bring it down, so you need to know what your temperature is.

Agree with PP you must check your temperature. A high temperature can also cause shivers.

Get a thermometer and in the meantime take 2 paracetamol. If you have a high temp it will bring it down and you should stop shivering.

Sounds like Endure in Leeds - I had a similar issue with Reading and the night laps..

Some of it will be the lack of sleep and adrenaline, have a warm bath, put on pjs, socks, climb into bed and get some sleep.

It’s an amazing event, but can really take it out of you

PARACETAMOL IS A REALLY REALLY BAD IDEA IF YOU HAVE HYPOTHERMIA.

Please STOP suggesting it.

Paracetamol is not contraindicated in hypothermia.

Hypothermia is a very unusual side effect of paracetamol although it has been induced in mice when delivered at massive doses.

Don’t have a bath. This is very bad advice.

What you really need is to take up temperature and A and E. You’ve waiting 18 hours, please don’t wait any longer. Pop a hat on if you have one too.

Why is a bath bad advice? I find it the most effective way to warm myself through.

BrendaSmall · 30/06/2024 18:46

Warm drink and pop a hat on also warm socks if you have any. Do you have a wheat bag or a small hot water bottle that you can pop on the back of your neck?

There is a big difference between feeling a bit cold and hypothermia which a medical emergency for which you need immediate medical help.

Having a hot bath when you have hypothermia can cause blood to be diverted to arms and legs away from the heart and brain, causing dangerous low blood pressure and iregular heart rhythms.
