I reported drug dealing outside my house and regret it

For the second day in a row while waiting in the car for my LO to wake up from their nap I've witnessed drug dealing right by our house. Today I decided to report it to the police without thinking too much of it, simply because I don't want my children growing up somewhere like this but now I'm panicking if this goes further the drug dealers will know who has reported them/my name etc (I gave my name, DOB and address to the police). After some thought I'm regretting reporting this and wish I'd left it alone as I'm worried about the repercussions. My partner works away often so it's often just me and my LO and I'm also pregnant so I'm worried our safety could be at risk.

Does anyone have any experience of this kind of thing/any advice? I made a quick decision and now regret it hugely and wish I'd left it alone.

They won’t know you reported it and they’re unlikely to want the attention that comes from exerting some kind of pointless retribution. You did the right thing.

Tilly22222 · 30/06/2024 14:24

You’ve done the right thing. The police definitely won’t pass on your details. (Tbh they probably won’t do much at all- maybe make it more likely your street is included in a patrol? But you need much more than a single complaint without evidence or identification to actually arrest someone.)

annoyedatlandlord · 30/06/2024 14:25

The police won’t give out any information to the dealer(s) about who reported them. Several other people could have too, you never know. They’ll have no way of knowing it was you. Don’t worry at all.

Iggityziggety · 30/06/2024 14:26

Very unlikely to do anything about it sadly. They definitely won't give your details as the reporting person.

Thevelvelletes · 30/06/2024 14:26

You will be fine, the chances of a prosecution are small and they may get pulled over on a traffic stop so there would be no link back to you.

DaveWatts · 30/06/2024 14:26

They won't know! For all you know several neighbours have reported also. We had a similar problem during lockdown and reported every single time - must have put at last 20 reports in online! No negative repercussions but they stopped doing it so I'm guessing the police managed to build up enough info for a load of arrests.

Comedycook · 30/06/2024 14:26

I think you did the right thing. If they get arrested how will they know it's because anyone reported it?

Iamawomenphenominally · 30/06/2024 14:28

Try not to worry.

If you wanted to you could ask a note be put on the crime report asking for the police not visit you at your home address. You could call the non emergency number and request it, explain you are worried after making the report.

You were right to report it, and they won't know for sure who did make the report.

If you don't already, I'd suggest getting a video doorbell that covers the front of your house. It may help you feel more secure and deter any wrong uns from loitering nearby or worse.

ItsTheGAGGGGGGGG · 30/06/2024 14:30

The chances of the police actually doing anything are slim so I don’t think you need to worry

Geordie01 · 30/06/2024 14:46

Nothing will happen to you and nothing will happen to the dealers

WinterTreacle · 30/06/2024 14:50

They will not give out your details. It will be fine. They may just drive down your road to see if they see them in order to stop and search. They can’t do anything unless they see them themselves. I wouldn’t be worried about this.

cocolocos1 · 30/06/2024 14:52

I'm looking into a ring doorbell now, the woman on the phone did say it they were to contact me again it would be via phone. There seems to be many ring doorbells does anyone recommend a specific one that it best?

Please don’t regret reporting it. The police will not give your information to anyone.
It may be that you don’t see any action but it doesn’t mean the police are ignoring it completely.

I got an Amazon one, wireless doorbell. Just connects to the existing internet really easily and its easy to install next to the door. Battery lasts about 3 months on full monitoring usage, and I recommend having a spare so you can swap them out easily.

I’ve reported drug dealing outside my house dozens of times including providing video footage, descriptions and car registrations and the police did precisely nothing so I don’t think you’ve got anything to worry about.

LoveSandbanks · 30/06/2024 15:43

We used to provide intelligence to
the police about the drug dealer over the road. We also knew full well that the police were actively watching them. Absolutely no way will the police give your details out or even hint that they’d received a call from a neighbour.

They almost certainly won’t appear to do anything but will have added it to
their dossier.

princess12xxxxxs · 19/08/2025 17:14

I want to report a drug dealer as i owe them money should i do that as its every month and even tired moving away any suggestions

AcquadiP · 19/08/2025 17:20

Worry not, the police are interested in the big fish not the street sellers who are two to a penny. It's highly unlikely they'll act upon the information.

ClosetBasketCase · 19/08/2025 17:25

I frequently report the ones on my street. its unseemly and leads to further unsocial behaviour.

They don't know it's you!!

DeLaRuiz · 19/08/2025 17:29

I think it’s absolutely brilliant that you contacted the police. We have to behave as though we have an active police force and an active law enforcement. We can’t give up and let the dross run the show. If we keep showing up for Law and Order, they can’t pretend ‘ crime is dropping’ and further de- fund the police.
