This is Robert Cornelius (1809-1893), an American photographer. In 1839 set up his camera, sat in front of it for 15 minutes, and in doing so became the subject of what is generally accepted to be the first photographic portrait (and, simultaneously, the first selfie).

There’s a book that’s just come out called The Ministry of Time which was apparently prompted entirely by the author seeing an old photo and thinking, hmm, Victorian hottie 😉 And so she wrote a time travel romance…
