To be annoyed about the school raffle?

marmaladeiismyfave · 29/06/2024 19:41

Raffle was a week ago. I had to leave just before the raffle as the youngest was feeling tired and had had enough of the sun.
I've been informed we won the 2nd prize in the raffle, but the school have not mentioned anything, and apparent last year they just rolled it over to the next person who was there. I get that it's raising funds for the school, but AIBU to be a little annoyed about this?

Go and ask them about it.

MumDoingMyBest · 29/06/2024 19:46

Not unreasonable to be annoyed. Every raffle I've been to has made it clear if they will save prizes or if you can only win if you are there.
Unless there is a drip feed that the prize was a hamper of fresh fish I think they should have kept your prize aside for you and given you x amount of time to collect from the school office.

Can you check with the school if they did keep your prize and then feedback that they should let people know in advance that you have to be there when the raffle is drawn to win?

Needmorelego · 29/06/2024 19:48

It all depends on the rules.
I belong to a social group that has a Christmas raffle. The rules are you have to be there when it's drawn to claim the prize (or have a private agreement with someone to hold your tickets and claim on your behalf).
The primary school my daughter attended was different. When you bought a ticket your name was written on the back so essentially your name was pulled out - not a number - and if you weren't there you would be told to collect the prize from the school office.
You need to speak to the organisers to find out what the specific rules are.
(at the primary school about 50% of the prizes were never claimed).

I will of course ask them about it next week, but I'm assuming that as I haven't heard a peep from them in all likelihood it's been given away. There was no mention of needing to be there in person, my name & telephone number was on the ticket stub. Just a bit poor in my opinion, I thought they needed a license and had to do things by the book as far as possible.

Yabu to be annoyed about something that may not have happened.

Spirallingdownwards · 29/06/2024 20:04

Please don't now say that you are one of those people who don't answer calls from unknown numbers as it is likely to be a PTA committee member calling you about the prize! Have you asked in the school office?

bows101 · 29/06/2024 20:04

I'd expect them to call/email. Not everyone can be expected to be there? Our school raffle is held at the end of the fete and the fete finishes at 8. No way will I be there that late after working all day and I suspect many others wouldn't be too! We do write our contact details on the stubs though...

Viscoelasticity · 29/06/2024 20:21

Not the point, but there was a great thread on here ages ago about a woman who won a ‘guess the sweets’ jar in absentia. one of the organisers took it home and was very obstructive about handing it over. OP fought tooth and nail for her rightful winnings and got the jar handed over eventually with half the sweets missing!

What is this prize that you’re so annoyed about missing out on it’s making you officious?

loropianalover · 29/06/2024 20:37

when were you informed?

MissingMoominMamma · 29/06/2024 20:38

What was it?

Amsx · 29/06/2024 20:52

Just ask them

Namechangeforthis88 · 29/06/2024 21:05

That is against the law. See 12.5.5 https://www.fundraisingregulator.org.uk/code/specific-fundraising-methods/lotteries-prize-competitions-and-free-draws. What's the point of taking names and numbers? Last time I had anything to do with a raffle we did the draw at half time so we wouldn't have to take details and chase after people with their prizes.

Londonrach1 · 29/06/2024 21:08

Who told you you had won, tbh if not there it probably passed to next who was there..that's life. Ask in office next week

VerasMacAndHat · 29/06/2024 21:10

Was this arranged by the PTA / Friends of School X? If so it will one of tbe committee who should inform you. Rather than the school.
I'm sure you have the contact details for someone and could message or call?

Luio · 29/06/2024 21:10

Isn’t it usually the parents association who do this kind of stuff?

Queenofwistfulthinking · 29/06/2024 21:18

If it's a old bottle of Christmas booze someone had donated , meh shit happens. An all expenses paid trip to the Caribbean with spending money , fucking raging.

This.

When this happened at our school Fayre, because the name of the pupil was on the ticket, the committee contacted the school office to advise who was the winner and the prize was left at the school office, for the pupil to collect at the end of the next school day.

OneFrenchEgg · 29/06/2024 21:29

Check your kids bookbags and pockets - our school used to send a sleep home with the child

If it’s a voucher for a cut and blow dry at Mary’s salon, don’t for goodness sake offer to look at her website.😚

You know something, @viques, it could well be that it was a voucher for a cut & blow which Mary managed to quietly take back...just a thought, like.

Usually the PTA organises fairs and raffles - they are often working parents themselves who volunteer to raise funds for the school. I’d ask them, the chances are they are just very busy, because events are a huge undertaking (often understaffed because of not enough parent volunteers).

waltzingparrot · 29/06/2024 21:56

Did they ask for your phone no to write on the stub? That would surely suggest they would ring you if it was a winning ticket.
What would be the point of taking your number if you had to be there.
