To get help with my mortgage from UC while also getting help from my dad?

UndertheCedartree · 29/06/2024 15:44

When I had a mental breakdown I was hospitalised. I had to claim UC. They gave me a small amount towards the interest on my mortgage. My dad paid the rest. Should I have told them I was getting help from my dad?

A friend is telling me I should have and I shouldn't have got help with my mortgage from UC. It's making me nervous that I've done something wrong. Does anyone know?

hell yes you should have told them and indeed in applying… would have been asked the specific question about other income that you ticked NO to 🧐

OwwOwwLowFat · 29/06/2024 15:47

Help from your dad is not "income", it's just a gift/loan between family. Income is earned whether through work or interest on savings etc.

OnAndOnAndonAgain · 29/06/2024 15:48

No, it's not income and you used what uc gave you for what it was meant to be used for, paying some of the interest. If your dad wanted to help you out by paying the rest they aren't going to be bothered about that

General earnings includes wages, salary and fees. It also includes payments of statutory sick pay, statutory maternity pay, ordinary statutory paternity pay, additional statutory paternity pay and statutory adoption pay, shared parental pay and statutory parental bereavement pay. Some other payments are also included as employed earnings, a full list of these can be found in Paragraph H3072 (ADM Chapter H3).

I don't think think you need to declare your dad helping you but I would check whether the mortgage help is a benefit or a loan, often you need to repay help with mortgage payments

IDoLikeToBeByTheSea · 29/06/2024 15:49

It’s fine OP, you don’t need to report it. The mortgage interest support is a loan anyways so you’ll have to pay it back either way.

fruitbrewhaha · 29/06/2024 15:50

Some friend. Just tell them it was a loan and you will pay your father back.

I don’t know the system personally but I do t feel
like you’ve done anything morally wrong.

I didn't tick anything. I was too unwell.

Yes, you are right, it is a loan.

someone applied on your behalf?

did you father pay in to your account or direct to bank?

how much did your dad pay?

Yes. Someone came from the jobcentre to do it.

He paid to me. £200 per month.

It's irrelevant, it isn't income and uc aren't going to care who pays the rest of ops interest/mortgage

Sprinkles211 · 29/06/2024 17:36

No money from family is gifted and is not anything to worry about unless you go above £6000 you then need to report your balance each month on your journal where around £4.50? Per £250 over £6000 would be taken off your uc reward until your capital goes back under £6000. The help you have for your mortgage is an smi loan, this will need to be repaid usually on the sale of your house out of your equity.

I gift my daughter £250/£350 a month. She claims UC, totally allowed.
