Pigeon drama. What to do?

While I was in the bedroom, I heard a loud "Bang!" as something hit the window. I looked outside and initially saw nothing. However, my neighbour, who was outside at the time, informed me that a pigeon had flown straight into the window and fallen. I went downstairs and found the bird in my garden. This happened last night, and the bird is still alive but has most likely broken its spine. I provided some shade and water, but it hasn't drunk any. I'm unsure what to do. The bird will probably die, but dehydration might hasten its death. I cannot bring myself to kill it to ease its suffering. 😱🤧

Any advice?

I can’t believe how many people are advocating to just kill the pigeon, very unnecessarily cruel! Glad you contacted the wildlife sanctuary OP - we have one near us and I've taken birds including a pigeon and mice, you can even ring for an update. Pigeons are very sweet

How exactly is putting an end to suffering cruel? What is cruel is leaving it there knowing that it is probably suffering and potentially dying a slow painful death, there are worse things in life than a swift death / humane euthanasia.

The rehabber will have told you not to take it to a vet or the RSPCA because they are classed as vermin and therefore are routinely pts when dropped in at a vets. They obviously want to give it a chance but unless they are willing to actually pay for vet care to treat it or at least gain access to pain relief then they are potentially going to allow it to suffer un-nessisarily too in the course / name of saving it and I would wonder if these are qualified / licensed rehabbers or just self declared do-gooders.

Vets don’t charge to euthanise wildlife, I would likely just drop it off with them if it seemed significantly hurt.

The wildlife specialist told me that it may survive as it moves its neck.
I am not in a rush of killing it and will leave it to the specialist. An average person doesn't have X ray in the eyes and does not recognise if it has a chance to recover or not

Oh this is just an awful situation to be in. I couldn't bring myself to kill an injured animal, and that goes against all my beliefs, as I wouldn't want to see any animal suffering. I feel like a coward.

Those of you who could, if you knew for sure there was no way back for the animal, I totally admire you.

I'm glad you have a solution OP. That last few hours must've been tough.

I had a young woodpecker fly against a window last year. I put it in an open box and kept it there on my rooftop terrace during the night. It was still there the next morning. I was then able to bring it to a woman who looks after injured wild birds and - if possible - releases them. The woodpecker made a full recovery and was eventually released.
i hope the wildlife rescue is able to help the pigeon. ❤️

What a lovely outcome and a beautiful bird❤️.

Any news on Pigey's recovery?

Any news on Pigey's recovery?

It was collected by the wildlife volunteer who delivered it to a volunteer vet who said that it is a concussion only and it is likely that Mr Pigeon will recover

@GlitteryUnicornSparkles because unless you are a trained vet, then you have no idea about the medical state of the animal and wringing something’s neck, smacking it over the head with a spade or putting its head under a car wheel is not humane euthanasia and may not be a quick death.

GasPanic · 01/07/2024 16:09

Far better than having your head crushed by a brick*

Huzzah for Mr. Pigeon.

*Although who knows given the way the world is at the moment.

Exactly. An amateur fucking up at something like this does the opposite of putting it out of its misery. Do it right or not at all. There's no 'give it a go' with something like this.

Bless your heart OP!!

Ahhh good job op! Been many a time i thought a pidge or other bird was a goner and a local rescue has nursed them back to health. They seem more robust than we think!

I don’t recall advocating any of the above methods, or even necessarily doing it oneself, I stated that there are worse things than a swift death / humane euthanasia and that ending suffering is not cruel. I also stipulated that vets will do this to wildlife for free.

Thanks so much! That's fantastic! 🙂

There's probably a local charity

You would be better off asking on a local facebook or next door page
