To work out which is the best Eco laundry detergent to use

Tablet/ non tablet
Bio/non bio
Brand

Method is apparantly a bit dubious eco wise. Always used Ecover liquid but trying Smol tablets as less plastic but dh looked at the ingredients and wasn’t that impressed.

Disappointed to learn that Ecover is actually owned by SC Johnson.

It’s a minefield and we do so much laundry I’d like to know the best option but it seems tricky to find out.

Bio d are fab, uk made, lots of stuff, I use non bio fragrance free liquid, stain bar and fabric conditioner. Price wise bit more than some, all products great tho

I use Dri Pak Liquid Soap. It leaves my washing lovely and soft. Fragrance free with no preservatives and great for sensitive skin. You can use it for all sorts of cleaning tasks. I only wish it was in bigger bottles.

Is there any info anywhere re which products are best for the environment and can do a good job?

I use an eco egg. Works well for my psoriasis and I do t have to lug bottles or boxes home from the shops!

Mothership4two · 29/06/2024 11:06

We use Clara. I found the Ecoegg just didn't get my mucky lot's clothes cleam enough.

Nancy Birtwhistle has "recipes" to make your own eco laundry liquid & fabric conditioner in her books & FB/insta.

My neighbour runs an eco business which does refills of cleaning products, we use the Fill brand of washing liquids and get it topped up in the original glass bottles. Very happy with all aspects of this.

I recently started a similar thread to this, only I wanted powder. I have ended up with Ecover powder (mainly because Sainsbury's stock it and I'd completely run out!). It seems fine, but I was also dubious about it being owned by SC Johnson. I'd like a better alternative if there is one.

I had the same misgivings as your DH about Smol btw!

I like ecover as it's the right combo of actually working, availability and eco credentials.
we use powder but if you want to use liquid you can get large refill packs.

Laundry sheets are good. A small cardboard box can hold several months’ worth of detergent so no plastic waste and takes up far less space when being transported, and can be posted through your door if buying online. Better for your machine than liquid and less messy than powder that often spills or gets clogged in the drawer if you use too much.

There are lots of companies that discuss how “green” their laundry sheets are so if you shop around you can read ingredients and see what they say about their manufacturing processes. Here is an example, but there are dozens of different ones easily found online. Most have sample sizes for sale so you can try before committing to a large pack and they often do subscriptions so you save money and don’t have to worry about running out.
