Asking prices on marketplace

Just getting things together for new baby and have found some lovely bargains but surprised at the prices many people now requesting on marketplace, often 50% of the cost of buying the item new!! Do people really manage to fetch these prices, who is happy to pay more than 20-30% of the original price for something 2nd hand from a private seller which also requires collection? When I sold things after last baby I felt lucky if got 25% back on what I’d paid

Most stuff I see is more like 80% cost new, with a lot of wear and tear. No one is going to pay that

ThistleWitch · 28/06/2024 10:19

50% is not excessive though - depending on the state of the item

Don't know about baby items but I sold loads of stuff on FB when we were moving house and generally 50-70% of the original price. All well looked after l, used- as new items.

Do people manage to actually sell at that price, I just won’t pay that on principle . Even buying brand new with free delivery, option to return, warranty etc I often get 20-25% off through a combination of discount and cashback and reward schemes. Why on earth I would pay only a bit less when someone’s had their full life out of something? Surely they would have had to give to friend, donate to charity or hoard if someone wasn’t willing to buy it off them 2nd hand. Seems a bit of a cheek to me but then perhaps there are people out there willing to pay these prices?

Wonder if certain areas of the country people just willing to pay these prices

Depends how old they are and condition. 50% of original price isnt bad if its still looking mostly as good as new. The fact things require collection makes no odds and if you turn up making silly offers be prepared to have a wasted journey for being a CF.

Depends what the item is and how good condition it is! So much baby stuff is basically brand new, either given as a present, a second one kept at grandparents house or just not really used. I’m more than happy to pay 50% off for something like that! I tend to try for a bargain but I see things regularly go for decent money. Much better than buying new anyway.

You would usually agree the price before going to collect anyway. I’ve bought some absolutely lovely excellent condition items for generally 20% of RRP, 10% for more worn but still nice condition. However I suppose if people like yourselves are actually willing to pay 50% I can see why some people maybe happy hanging out for those kind of prices.. supply and demand
