Prom car issues

Aibu to drive my son to prom.... Bear in mind he is happy with this, he isn't a flashy person he would hate to be the centre of attention and also I haven't got the funds!!
I was speaking to someone out side the school yesterday and it's just bothered me I said I was taking him, her reply was "well I got my girl a Lambo" 🙄am I really going to be the only parent to drive their child to school in our normal car? It's an old car but still looks ok with a carwash 😅

Prom.....where the well off can show it off a little bit more. The not quite so well off can blow money they can ill afford to keep up with them. The not well off at all either put themselves into debt or have to disappoint their DD/DS.

Horrible American tradition.

From my experience it is not the well-off who are wasting money on limos and OTT outfits..they don’t bother with this stuff where I live.

Thevelvelletes · 29/06/2024 06:01

School disco.

LlynTegid · 29/06/2024 06:52

The unreasonableness is going to prom at all. The decision should be whether he walks or goes in a car, not which car if you drive him there.

Any school hosting a prom would never be able to be an outstanding one were it my decision. Sooner this awful US tradition leaves our shores the better.

VivX · 02/07/2024 19:46

Driving him in your normal car will be absolutely fine.

There were a lot of flash cars, rally cars and even tractors when my eldest had her prom so it is a thing but a lot of people just dropped the kids off in their normal cars

Azurebird · 02/07/2024 20:24

Last year it was about 50/50 split of parents or hired fancy vehicles. Venue was out in the sticks. One boy turned up on his grans mobility scooter all decorated up. But someone must have driven him to the hotels driveway and unloaded it.

Josienpaul · 02/07/2024 20:44

I watched a video of two girls being delivered in this van thing with lift, lights, music, smoke and they made this massive cringey entrance - not one kid was looking as they did it - just family filming. honestly, the amount of ‘friends’ that do stuff like this for their kids but living on the breadline - one payment away from being bankrupt. At least if I lost my job, I’d cope for a few months. I’ve got friends who have amazing everything - all on CC and on tick. Let them be and ignore - they’re often just showing off money they don’t have.

Rubbish. There have been proms in the uk for decades. I had one 20 years ago (including a made to measure dress and hotel stay etc), and my siblings had them 10
years before me.

It ok for kids to have fun you know, you don’t have to let yours join in.

DiscoBeat · 02/07/2024 21:06

I think it's much nicer that you are taking him. I'm cringing for this woman 'I've got a Lambo'. My niece recently had her prom and her Dad drove her in their not new but very clean car. Like the rest of the parents!

Yes I went to my school prom 30 years ago, but boys wore charity shop suits and girls bought a dress from Top Shop. It has become much more Americanised with kids spending a fortune on designer gear and fancy transport to make their prom Insta ready, it’s sad.

ArticSaviour · 02/07/2024 21:18

We banned drop offs for this reason. All of ours are dropped off at school and get a bus to the venue. Removes unnecessary expense

People turned up to ours in limos, a helicopter, supercars etc. lots of girls had dresses made for them (mine was over £300 twenty odd years ago), hair done and makeup etc.

This was totally normal for our very normal town.

And we did it twice- year 11 and upper 6th.

The only difference is we didn’t do the tan because it wasn’t in fashion.

Lots were dropped off by their parents and wore dresses from Debenhams too.

The pomp and carry on isn’t new- people just notice it more now because pictures are on social media, back then the only people who knew about it were the people involved.

Creamteasandbumblebees · 02/07/2024 22:10

We have a very large secondary school in our town and turning up in random vehicles is a huge thing. I just watched the 'prom parade' a few days ago as my Goddaughter was going. There was every type of vehicle going, the best I saw was 3 lads pushing wheelie-bins with three of their mates inside! As well as lots of flashy cars and fun rides, loads turned up in regular cars and loads turned up on foot.

ThisQuirkyPeachHare · 03/07/2024 00:16

My daughter was driven by her grandad in his own car, much more special than a hired car.
As my daughter said, you can rock up in a Bentley or limo but everyone knows you've only hired it so what the point if you can't own it 🤣
A few of her friend group did go in fancy hire cars, others in their own... But it was so cold and windy that no one really cared 🫣
Hope he has a great night!

Avonandice · 03/07/2024 00:25

My eldest child went in a very very nice brand new mercedes, a friends partner offered her either that or his soft top BMW. She went for the Merc as her hair was in a fancy updo.

Second child was quite happy to go in my car which i put some ribbons on but when she met up with her friends they changed minds and went in one of the dads defender. Defender was held together with hope and bailer twine and had just done a day on the farm. That prom had more tractors than anything fancy as it was a year with a few farmers children.

AlocasiaPolly · 03/07/2024 08:16

Our school banned cars because it was getting ridiculous. It became a real divide between the haves and have nots.
They hire a bus, and if the kids don't arrive on the bus they are refused entry.

Is this in USA??

No this definitely happens in the UK too 😔 at my 1st dc prom we had an aray of sports cars, fire trucks and decorated HGV lorries! My dc was dropped off in the car park discretely and walked in along with a few mates

This very much happens in the UK!

Nothing fancy at our school. My oldest two cycled. My youngest was driven by his friend's dad. Just a short trip round the corner to the school in his old estate car. . . with 12 boys squashed into it.

Homegrown11 · 04/07/2024 14:48

My daughter’s friend’s sister’s friend’s husband’s friend (I’m not even kidding!!) lent them a Bentley to drive the girls to prom last week! I wouldn’t have paid for anything and don’t think anyone else did either. There were also a fair few swanky Range Rovers and Mercs, a horse, a fire engine, two tractors (we’re rural), a campervan, a couple of motorbikes and a load of average cars! Don’t worry about it if he’s happy!

Rowgtfc72 · 04/07/2024 17:09

@Variolia exactly the what we did. Dh gave the car a good scrub and we bought ribbon to machine dds dress😁

xxFairyNuffxx · 04/07/2024 21:01

We had a change of plan this evening. The Zafira needs a visit to the garage. So my girl arrived by Corsa instead.

elliejjtiny · 04/07/2024 21:11

Ds1 turned up in our battered old car, driven by dh and with all his younger brothers in the back. He wore his dad's best suit and his school shoes. Lots of his year group were driven in normal cars by their parents. Some hired a car, some got someone they knew with a fancy car to drive them, one boy came on a tractor and 2 girls came on horseback.

I did have a prom, I had a sixth form ball but I walked to it. I did have a new very fancy dress though that I wore to my university ball as well. Cost just over £100 I think from monsoon.

Donut22 · 05/07/2024 08:48

Prom update 😄
He survived going in my car 😅there was a mix of flash and old bangers like mine, I am so so glad that I didn't pay loads of money for a car, no one was even looking as they all went straight in .
