To report hit and run even though hardly any damage?

A lovely neighbour just knocked on my door and told me a man just hit my car and drove off. She managed to get his licence plate. The only damage I can see is he broke my front licence plate as the plastic is cracked and a few screws missing.

Should I report it? I'm mostly pissed off that he didn't leave a note. If he had knocked and apologised I would probably of said don't worry as my car is old and quite battered.

I would - if it was enough to damage the plate, I'd want to report it just incase it's knocked anything out under the bumper / any other random bits.

Spongebag · 27/06/2024 19:12

There could be underlying damage - I'd want the car to be checked over so yes I would report.

Funkyslippers · 27/06/2024 19:13

Yes report it and take it to a garage to get an estimate to see if there's more underlying damage

DinnaeFashYersel · 27/06/2024 19:16

Yes absolutely you report it.

Shitandrun · 27/06/2024 19:35

Ok, I've reported it online to local police. Should I contact my insurer? I'm a new driver so this is a first for me.

Yeah, contact your insurer. Especially as you've already reported to the police.

Be warned, though..!! I'm currently going through court for a hit and run that I have video evidence for. It's coming up to 2 years and no end in sight.

whatdoidonowffs · 27/06/2024 19:41

Depends if you want your insurance to go up even more than usual

Newuser75 · 27/06/2024 19:46

Yeah I'd maybe not report it to your insurance company as they may put your premiums up.
Someone drove into the back of me while I was stationary and mine went up a fair bit!

Shitandrun · 27/06/2024 19:56

Oh crap, so what was the point of reporting it to the police then? I doubt they'll hunt him down for a cracked licence plate. Should I bother going to get a quote for the damage? Who would I give it to?

What I would do is go and get the car checked over in the next day or 2, if there's hidden damage that's going to be expensive to fix then contact your insurance.

New plates are about £40 for front and rear from Halfords fitted, hardly worth claiming for really if you’d been hit hard enough to do more damage there would be more damage to yours
im sure the police have forgotten about it already 😂😂

Sookafatwan · 27/06/2024 20:17

Hell no dont report it to your insurer as your premium will rocket!!!

Shitandrun · 27/06/2024 20:20

Thanks everyone! Ok, I know a friendly mechanic so I'll get him to have a look. If it's just cracked plates I won't bother reporting. Bugger, I wish I never reported it to police now. His car was brand new so I guess that was punishment enough!

I had an accident where someone hit me from behind, they admittedfull fault. I am still with the same insurance company and didn't get a price hike but if I insure with someone else it jumps up once I add the accident.

Sookafatwan · 27/06/2024 20:22

Dont worry, and don't do the first thing people on here tell you to. The police won't give a fk though, I doubt they pass details to insurers. Unless it was a major whack theres unlikely to be any structural damage so hopefully just needs the new plate.

ItsAlwaysSunnyInMyDreams · 27/06/2024 23:11

Be aware that not reporting an accident to your insurer is fraud and in the (granted unlikely) event they find out they may cancel your policy all together. I reported me hitting another car in a car park and when they asked me if my car had any other damage I said I had hit a wall a few months back and scraped that same side (as I had taken photos that I needed to provide and figured they might be able to see not all damage was from a vehicle). It was classed as another incident on my insurance (as a non claim thing but still) and not sure if they would be more difficult if I had wanted to actually claim to fix the damage to mine (it's only minor/cosmetic and given my excess I imagine it would cost me roughly the same or slightly more to fix on my own at a more convenient time).

When people said 'report it' surely they meant to your insurance company?
