Does everyone have 'trauma' or 'anxiety'? (inverted commas used because I don't necessarily mean diagnosed with, but believing you have one or both).

I want to know:

whether you believe you have trauma or anxiety that affects you, (that has triggers) vote IANBU

OR

whether you have neither of these things vote IABU.

I have been through traumatic events in my life (haven't we all?), but they have not done harm to me. I have had a single period of a few years where a traumatic event left me with clinical depression and a significant MH problem which impacted my life hugely (and still lingers). During that period certain things did trigger a physiological response which was scary. It's behind me now. My emotional and physical response could be explained, albeit I needed a great deal of help to get through it.

I'm quite highly strung I would say, which does cause me to be over anxious at times, but I don't suffer with anxiety as such, it just manifests itself in a very uncomfortable way during period of stress. It's just how I am.

Roundeartheratchriatmas · 26/06/2024 15:38

I have things that make me anxious.

I have experienced things that I found traumatic at the time and on at least one occasion afterwards as well.

But I don’t have either “trauma” or “anxiety” no.

BouleDeSuif · 26/06/2024 15:41

I've got PTSD from being trafficked. But I hide it well and I haven't got anxiety.

Beezknees · 26/06/2024 15:43

I have been through trauma in childhood but it doesn't affect my day to day live. It affects how I view men and relationships, but I don't have any mental health issues - no anxiety or depression or anything like that.

BrieAndChilli · 26/06/2024 15:44

think I would be classed as having experience trauma - my ACE score is 7. Its not something that has ever been diagnosed as such although having been in care/adopted it has been documented.
I do suffer from anxiety as an adult which I can link back to childhood events. I often wake in the night with panic attacks and I get extreme anxiety about something awful happening to my kids. I try and control it as much as I can.

But I am also of the opinion that every has had some sort of 'trauma' in thier life and that most of us just get on with it (whilst hiding our anxiety and dark thoughts).

thje reason is appears to be more prevalent is that it is more acceptable to talk about it, we also understand more the effects that certain events have on our psyche. 50 years ago people were depressed/anxious etc but they had to pretend everything was ok or they would get carted off to the looney bin.

Vonniee7 · 26/06/2024 15:47

Yes I've had trauma. I've had to deliver two sleeping babies and almost died in the process. I've had counseling where the counselor said she believed I had PTSD but wasn't qualified to formally diagnose it herself. Many things can trigger a response in me.

I'm lumping actually diagnosed and self-diagnosed together which I know isn't really fair, because online, you don't know which is the case and without prying wouldn't in real life either.
I'm surprised actually by the number of people who don't associate themselves with either.

People don’t tend to be on online forums stating that they don’t feel anxious, or suffer from trauma, so of course it is more likely online that you encounter those who do.

sl0th · 26/06/2024 15:55

I am medically diagnosed with it. I don't just "believe" that I have it!

DancingLions · 26/06/2024 15:57

I'm glad things are more talked about now. Up until age 5 I had a reasonable childhood. Then my sister was born and my mum seemingly changed overnight. Clearly she had PND, I see that now as an adult. But she never got proper treatment for it or properly recovered. I suspect she's also ND in some way, which didn't help. It affected our whole childhood.

Things might have been very different if she'd been able to talk about it. Even just online.

Workawayxx · 26/06/2024 15:59

I have elements of trauma and anxiety but not diagnosed, I do not discuss with anyone and I just get on with life really. It doesn't affect my every day life in terms of "I can't leave the house today" but does affect me in smaller ways (again, that other people would be unaware of).

I think everyone has past events that affect them (even if you can't remember the specific event), especially where you've pushed it down and tried to just "get over it". And certain triggers will activate the feelings but most of us will just tell ourselves that our anger was justified or that we are just feeling hormonally weepy today or whatever.

Octavia64 · 26/06/2024 16:00

I am medically diagnosed with anxiety and with dissociative disorder.

These diagnoses were given by my gp following some severe mental health issues.

I take anti anxiety medication.

The dissociative disorder is a response to childhood trauma.

Yep! Goady and sneery. From the thread title it was obviously going to be so before I opened it.
