To let you know there is a serious whooping cough outbreak in the UK?

Just returned from the GP with my 12 year old DS.. I wasn't aware but there is a really bad whooping cough outbreak so thought sharing the symptoms may help other parents. Apparently the vaccine stops working effectively at about 10 years old so they are seeing a huge rise during this outbreak in 10-15 year olds. Its also really important to start antibiotics ASAP within the first week or so to prevent the spread in your home as it's caused by bacteria.
For us it seemed like a typical cold - low grade fever, congestion, runny nose that improved within 3 days but then the awful cough started. He is generally okay between coughs but the cough's are so violent they have made him get sick a few times and he battles to breathe during them gasping for air with the gasping whoop sound -he also coughs up this horrible clear stringy mucous. Luckily we have antibiotics now but it's definitely something that should be on every parent's radar right now as it's so contagious and very dangerous for pregnant unvaccinated women and unvaccinated smaller children - plus really awful for the kids with it. I didn't even think of whooping cough as assumed my DC would be okay as all vaccinated. Hope this helps someone!

The 100 day cough that has been around since before Xmas is said to be linked to whooping cough. It’s not new news.

CormorantStrikesBack · 26/06/2024 06:44

Sorry to hear about your son. Ive had it twice, the first time I was so poorly……six weeks off school! Hope your son recovers quickly.

Kitkat1523 · 26/06/2024 06:49

It’s been around since Christmas hasn’t it?

‘It’s not new news’ - did you mean to be rude? ‘I think it might be the same thing OP, but good to know there is a bad outbreak.’

montysma1 · 26/06/2024 06:55

My daughter just had it too. I was dumfounded when the doctor said that's what it was.

BadSkiingMum · 26/06/2024 06:57

Five babies have recently died from pertussis.

Whether it’s new or not, it’s very serious. Thank you OP for raising awareness.

No it’s not “new news’ but it’s bloody debilitating and there isn’t nearly enough of a fuss being made about it. My husband has been sick for two months and he’s a very fit runner.

OP we bought a humidifier which really helped at night. I hope your son is ok

Luddite26 · 26/06/2024 06:59

Thanks OP it is a worry as at one point most GPs had no idea what someone presenting with whooping cough was like. My DD had it when she was 16 months even though she had been fully vaccinated. She had meningitis as a baby and seemed to catch everything after that. I remember sitting up with her every night whooping and being sick having no idea it was whooping cough. So it's good to be mindful. Hope your son recovers soon OP.

SparePantsAndLego · 26/06/2024 07:04

It may not be news to some but it is to me, so thank you @Overnightoats1.
I know this is AIBU but why are some posters so rude?🙄

She’s not being rude, just factual. There was a spate of threads on it on MN a few months ago. That doesn’t mean OP can’t post about it as well to keep people aware if they have the symptoms.

unlikelychump · 26/06/2024 07:07

Just to add something new to the discussion, my daughter had been diagnosed with mumps this week, which I wasn't expecting given she is fully vaccinated too. She is 10, no outbreak here that the gp knew of

Yes - I've heard of the 100 day cough but not that it is actually whooping cough that requires antibiotics or that the vaccine diminishes by 10 years old. That was new news to me! Perhaps I missed that! (Totally possible!)

My 12yo has had a bad cough for about a week but the actual cough doesn't sound bad. No 'whooping' or gasping for breath as such but it's very persistent . I keep debating on trying to get an app but I feel like I'll be dismissed as wasting time as he doesn't have a temp (although he did have one day of temp couple of days before his cough started). Nhs says not to come in for a cough less than 3weeks but also not to come in at all for WC as they can diagnose over the phone. He's mostly fine within himself.

Our doctors make you feel you are a massive inconvenience unless you're seriously ill so I never know if I'm under or over acting about appointments!

I think gps call it a 100 day cough variant cos they cba testing and filling out all the paperwork ( it’s a noticeable disease)…..but the treatment will be the same….I started on clarythramycin at day 5 but although it stops you being infectious it doesn’t reduce symptoms as such…..im 8 weeks in now and still have some violent coughing bouts every day

I feel like this also as my 13yo has been having coughing fits for several days now. It started off with cold symptoms, but now it's only coughing. I have kept him off school this week. He just isn't fit to go in. No temperature either, I have checked.

I suppose I could phone and ask advice from GP reception....just never know if you are doing the right thing!

SoulMole · 26/06/2024 07:16

I've just had it at 44. It was horrific. Still coughing after a month.

100 day cough isn't linked to whooping cough - it's another name for it!

Although lots of people are jumping on the bandwagon for relatively minor coughs and sayings it's 100 day cough. If you've had whooping cough you'll know

bramblesbig · 26/06/2024 07:21

Op glad you've got antibiotics and really hope dc improves soon. However don't be worry if they don't and the cough still lingers. The antibiotics aren't always affective for wc

Shewaswanton · 26/06/2024 07:21

Outbreak here in France too. Thanks for the warning, OP as my DSs live in UK and won’t be protected any more…

It is news to me that the vaccine wears off so early as 10 in fairness - I have been smugly ignoring the whooping cough stuff because my nine year old in vaccinated.

Mummyratbag · 26/06/2024 07:34

Son is in a class of 28 and a few months back an exhausting cough flew round the class. So many off with exhaustion. I wasn't aware of a whooping noise.
After about a month one of the mums went to GP (we all just assumed it was nasty virus/100 day cough which although lingering wasn't making them ill after initial 10 days) and tested positive for whooping cough..

Edited to say VERY contagious in classroom, but not at home. Son is 11 which fits what OP says.

Autumn1990 · 26/06/2024 07:35

Does the 100 day cough have the whoop sound of traditional whooping cough or is it severe. Tonal coughing fits?
Ive had whooping cough as a child and whooped, DS had a cough that didn’t go this winter. He coughed until he was sick and then coughed some more but no whoop.
I did take him to the doctors and he was fully vaccinated as a small child

Same, I saw the headlines a while ago and didn't pay much attention as I was secure in the knowledge my DC were vaccinated...didn't realise it wore off. Wonder why there isn't a booster, maybe there will be now.

I didn't know there was, I meant a routine booster automatically given at school.
