Did the heat mess up your sleep?

Really struggled last night with heat. So much so I slept on the sofa. Managed to sleep in bedroom during 2022 heatwave - regretting putting carpet upstairs. Bedroom has large windows and becomes a sauna during the day. Open windows didn’t take the edge off at all.

I've had no sleep either and I've got wood flooring in my bedroom, try lying on the sofa (even though it's leather) it still was warmish from the sun blazing in all day.
Got to get ready for work soon not sure how I'm getting through today 😩 coffee & more coffee

StMarieforme · 26/06/2024 04:49

We have a cooling unit on the landing and fans I. The bedrooms. Helps a bit!

Baital · 26/06/2024 04:52

Do you have a garden? I slept outside for the first part of the night last night, it was lovely and cool

Nonda · 26/06/2024 05:23

Do you keep curtains/blinds shut in your bedroom during the day to reduce sun?
Then open the windows at night and shut again once air temp goes up/before sun starts coming in the next day?

(Sorry if I am stating the bleeding obvious! )

hattie43 · 26/06/2024 05:42

Yes a problem getting to sleep but once asleep stayed asleep . I keep curtains closed in the day and have a good fan on overnight

FrenchandSaunders · 26/06/2024 05:42

I’m lucky that it doesn’t bother me. Still had duvet on. Windows open and fan on.

Happyhappyday · 26/06/2024 05:54

Not sure if this work in British houses but when I was a kid in my American house, we used to sleep in the basement because the floor is built on the foundation slab so stays really cool with a camping mat and light blankets and a fan. Even downstairs on say a kitchen tile floor might work? Or as others said, outside.

MidnightPatrol · 26/06/2024 05:57

OP it helps if you leave all the curtains closed during the day to keep the heat out - then late in the evening open windows / doors and circulate air with a fan.

I did sleep but was woken up at 530 because it was broad daylight which woke the kids up. May be investing in blackout blinds for this period next year.

Our (UK) house is built like this - two storeys at the front and three at the back with the basement room (our living room) being underground in the undercroft. We sleep in there in hot weather as it's insanely cool compared to the rest of the house.

I don't think it's been hot enough this time round though, the house isn't too hot even upstairs and the weather is due to break tomorrow.

FindingMeno · 26/06/2024 06:03

I was fine.
It's been a lot hotter so this feels completely manageable.
Sympathies to those who have had a crap night though.

Hoglet70 · 26/06/2024 06:13

I woke up a lot, it wasn't the best night. Worth it for some good weather though.

xxSideshowAuntSallyxx · 26/06/2024 06:18

I kept the curtains open in the sitting room last night and it definitely made a difference when I went in there this morning it was actually quite nice.

I live in a ground floor flat, my bedroom is at the front facing the road so I can't really leave my windows open at night, I'm used to it now though.

DilemmaDelilah · 26/06/2024 07:46

It is certainly a lot warmer at night than it has been so far this year, but it's nowhere near as warm at night (yet) than it has been in previous years. I live in the SW and the maximum it has been at night (outside temperature) is 13 degrees. In previous years it has been 18 or 19 - it hasn't got there yet.

I have a fan to use if I want it, and I sleep under just a sheet, or not even that, if it is hot. Air flow is important so I don't close my door and I have all the windows open upstairs. Also - I don't share a bed with anyone else. I am generally a hot person and I don't deal well with the heat, but I'm managing fine at the moment.

CrunchyCarrot · 26/06/2024 07:48

I couldn't get to sleep and eventually got up for awhile and went back to bed, falling asleep at around 3 a.m. Can't open the window at this time of year due to the high pollen count!

Looking forward to some fresher air later.

I was like Monday night. I have floor to ceiling windows .had my curtains shut all day made no difference. It was 29 in my room . I opend window after midnight . Then my neighbour was smoking strong weed which came into my room . I was so angry. Last night was a bit better for me.probably because I only slept 3hrs the night before.

mitogoshi · 26/06/2024 08:16

What heat? Was 12 overnight (sw) hardly warm.

fliptopbin · 26/06/2024 08:21

I think the real problem is that it went from cold to pretty warm within the space of about a day,so nobody has had time to get acclimatised yet. Where I am it has been about 26 degrees, which most non Brits would not call hot, but its the fact that the temperature went up by about 10 degrees in a day that does it. Oh well, apparently we are back to 19 degrees and rain at the weekend.

Yea gonna be cooler and rain. I'm going to moan about that to 😅

Daffodildilys · 26/06/2024 09:00

We have a lovely Dyson cooling fan - but we have our little grandson staying (only 16 months) so of course he got the fan.

He slept all night. Me and dh tossed and turned all night.

Yes, exactly this. I'm normally not bothered but the change was so drastic I tossed and turned all night. 😵

WeRateSquirrels · 26/06/2024 09:15

Doesn't bother me at all for some reason. Don't even have a fan.

Teamarugula · 26/06/2024 09:20

I left the curtains and blinds in the whole house closed all day so it didn’t get quite as hot. Also fan - a couple of years ago I bought a Meaco fan which has a timer setting, so I set it for an hour, by which time I had fallen asleep.

Panda89 · 26/06/2024 09:23

Slept fine, had the fan on (we always do tbh but turned it up to top setting) and slept under the duvet! We have an attic room which does get quite warm but it wasn’t as bad as we’ve had in previous years yet.
