Have graded haircuts gone out of fashion?

Like the one Katie Holmes has here: hair is shorter and frames the face coming in at just under chin length at the front, then slowly grades down to full length (shoulder length or longer).

I feel like this type of haircut was everywhere at a certain point, but that point was a long time ago, and I don’t really seem to see this any more? Seems like those who wear their hair long at the moment have it the same length all around? E.g. Anne Hathaway in The Idea of You (minus the fringe obviously)

My hair is long all around currently and I’m debating whether to get a haircut. I quite like the idea of giving it a bit more shape, but will it look old-fashioned if I ask for grading? Alexa Chung did still seem to be doing it in this pandemic hair cutting video she did, but I guess that itself is 4 years old now.

Before anyone chimes in: yes I know I can have my hair any way I want it and it doesn’t necessarily matter whether it’s ’in fashion’ or not, just that it’s flattering. But I’m curious if other people agree that they don’t seem to see the Katie Holmes type of grading any more?

YABU: grading is still the norm with long hair

YANBU: grading with long hair is out of fashion

Admittedly Im not Uber fashionable but my hair is similar to the Katie Holmes one. For me, I like having the length but my hair is thick and heavy and. Prefer the layer to give it movement and not take me forever to dry it as it does when all one length.

The 90s fashion returned, it's bound to be time for the 'Rachel' to come back

Bump

I've always had face framing layers cut in to give it some shape and I'm 50. If I didn't have the layers it would be flat and lank, never thought about whether it was in fashion or not

Bump

It’s pretty rude to bump your thread, just with the word ‘bump’ when someone has already given you a reply.

thinkfast · 26/06/2024 09:10

Don't like Katie Holmes' hair in that photo OP. If you want some layers, I think a wolf cut or a butterfly cut are more fashionable.

Seriously? This is AIBU - fast moving, so posts slip down a couple of screens really quickly. And she waited a full 10 hours.

It really isn’t.

So pick up something in that post to respond to. Has the same effect of bumping the post, and also gives the impression that the OP will actually read replies someone has written. Just writing ‘bump’ is better when there has been no reply. And the OP should have posted this in the S&B board anyway (which is busy, so no need to post here for traffic)

There's always a kitty cut if you don't mind going a little shorter.

I'm not a fan of the styles pictured.

ClaudiaWinklepanda · 26/06/2024 09:38

Those pictures are two extremes, Alexa Chung length and layers are nicer, IMO.

PurpleWhiteGreen123 · 26/06/2024 10:03

I had a long Rachel back in the day. But I was also 25 years younger!

My hair is now shoulder length and no layers. As it's greying, it's got wavier and so no style will stay in it. It's mostly in a bun or clip these days.

Also I hate wispy bits and fringes around my face. I've never been able to leave them alone, always pushing them back, which is annoying.

I agree. It was pretty rude not to acknowledge the decent reply she got.
I'm not a fan of that first hairstyle. Looks very dated and despite lots things coming into fashion I'm not sure that's one. But layers through the hair are nice and give some movement.

I clicked the thank you button to the first reply, which I agree is great, as soon as it was posted. But people don’t come to AIBU looking for one reply, they come for a survey of opinions.

I think it’s pretty rude to derail a thread by sailing in with some self-invented rules so that multiple replies then become about that rather than the question the poster originally asked.

I think the Katie Holmes cut is quite 90s, but I’ve seen a few people going back to that style recently, works if you’ve got nice thick hair.

It’s pretty rude to go round commenting stuff like this for absolutely no reason at all, but here we are.

elizzza · 26/06/2024 11:29

I think you still see cuts quite similar to the Katie Holmes picture but styled differently - more like this? It’s still graded at the front but styled to flick out or backwards.

Had to laugh. This so much!

Just had to look up a kitty cut. Never heard of out before.

Me too. Never heard of it but I quite like it.

Just to add, the cut that suits you depends alot on your face shape and hair texture.
These cuts a re for mostly straight hair. In my younger years I thought I could pull it off with thick (frizzy but actually curly now I look after it properly) hair but it's taken to my thirties to get a decent curly cut.
