To ask how tired you feel most days?

I am 40 and I am exhausted. I have a reasonably demanding full time job and two kids and all I can do is work and that’s it. I can’t go out or do anything and my weekends are spent recovering from the working week. In the week I’m up at 6am and on the go until about 10pm when my kids finally go to bed.

im having to use my half hour lunch break for a sleep in the car. I am absolutely exhausted. I sit down on the sofa and go to sleep at any given opportunity.

is this just how old age is? I will say I had bloods about six months ago and my iron level came back at 12 but the Gp said the range was from 11 up to about 300 or so I think?
She also said that my B12 levels were amongst the lowest she’s ever seen and recommended I had a supplement but I’ve not bothered because I can’t believe it’ll make that much difference. I took it sporadically initially but then gave up.

How tired is normal for my age?

I’ve said YABU as you’ve literally been told your B12 was through the floor and you’ve done nothing about it.
Also, if 12 is your actual ferritin level that’s too low as well.

B12 and low iron will absolutely make you feel as tired as this. Get another blood test and correct those things first.

That
Ferritin (I'm guessing) should be over 75 for hair growth so you will feel shit at 12
I take ferrous fumerate with a vitamin c tablet every other day

Here
£9 for a year supply of B12

@familyissues12345 did the Dr actually measure your B12, ferritin and folate, and also Vit D. These are not done as part of a routine test, so you need to ask for them.
walking through treacle is normal for very low Vit D

get them checked and then supplement for a few months til normal

Vettrianofan · 25/06/2024 20:03

O have been like that most of my adult life. If I go out for the day I end up paying the price days afterwards.

I don't work so I can rest when DC are all in school. I need that respite and sometimes that isn't even enough. Just had bloods done recently - all fine apparently.

Edited to add early 40s with 4dc

Apparently they did, as I've been low vit d before, but readings came back fine. I don't actually know what they were though, so who knows if they were really on the low side

It's such a horrible feeling!

Seems very ridiculous to go to a doctor ask why you're so tired, they advice you on your B12 levels and you go "fuck that" and then wonder why you're still tired?? Why waste the doctors time if you're not going to pay any attention to what they say??

You're getting older, your body is changing and you need some supplements to help you. It's shit but factual! Sort the B12, take some extra strength vit D and see how you get on.

Oh god I agree...

OP: I have been to the doctors, they've told me what's wrong but I ignored their advice. I'm still tired. Why?

I mean, ffs. Why can't some people take responsibility for themselves.

thegrumpusch · 25/06/2024 20:14

Just take the B12?

Youdontevengohere · 25/06/2024 20:16

So you’ve had tests that show you’re deficient in something, which has the result of making you feel exhausted. You are exhausted. But you chose not to do anything about the deficiency because… reasons? 🤯

Cheeesus · 25/06/2024 20:17

My daughter was exhausted on the iron level you have. Exactly the same, funnily enough.
We gave her these and were really careful with her diet, lots of iron rich food obv, but added vitamin c too.

I'm 34. I do have RA, anemia and chronic fatigue. It's horrible. I'm exhausted, all the time. Nothing helps. I also suffer from bouts of insomnia, which I think is just cruel!

MooseAndSquirrelLoveFlannel · 25/06/2024 20:19

Take the B12, it'll help.

I'm 43, full time demanding job, plus a hobby where I teach 2 evenings and 1 weekend morning each week and 3 children. DH works shifts as well.

I must admit, on weekends, other than teaching I have no energy to do anything. I go to bed at 9pm and can sleep anywhere from 5 hours to 13 hours.

I have a health condition as well which is tough. But my bloods are all fine, so not sure I have anything that could help. You need to try the medication.

JuliesName · 25/06/2024 20:22

You can't really complain if you went to a doctor and decided you know better and didn't take their advice?

For what it's worth I had ridiculously low B12 also and felt like exhausted shit all day long. Injections helped me.

Advice for anyone getting blood tests with a GP - look at the numbers yourself if you can. They have very wide thresholds and they’ll tell you you’re all good if you’re only just over the threshold. They won’t tell you if it’s not ‘optimum’

Ferritin is a case in point, everything I have read (reputable sources online) says that it really should be over 75, ideally closer to 100 but the GP will tell you it’s fine if it is over 30!

Vitamins make a huge difference OP. I was really ill when my vitamin D was too low. I could barely walk up the stairs!!

ToffeePennie · 25/06/2024 20:31

I am totally exhausted.
But I have the lowest iron levels my GP has ever seen, the lowest B12 they’ve ever seen and the lowest blood pressure she’s ever seen.
I absolutely have struggled with supplements and I have endless prescriptions for various vitamins and minerals that I am lacking. However, I can’t access them because I live in the crappiest area of the U.K. for NHS “care”. (The GP hasn’t ticked a box and I need an appointment to get them to tick it before I can access my prescription)
I wish I could do something more.

MadameMassiveSalad · 25/06/2024 20:37

So bloody tired. Dizzy most afternoons. 48yrs. Peri. Stopped HRT because it gave me anxiety & made me fat.

isthewashingdryyet · 25/06/2024 20:39

@ToffeePennie can you buy some iron and B12 and a multivitamin from your supermarket, much cheaper than a chemist, and at least start to take some supplements. Supermarket open 24 hours near me

Xyz1234567 · 25/06/2024 20:50

Get a printed copy of your blood test results and study that. Ask questions about anything you are unsure of.
My dad has chronic kidney disease ( not saying you have) and B12 tablets completely ineffective, so he has B12 injection every 3 months and this makes enormous difference.

Sheknowsaboutme · 25/06/2024 20:54

Unless you get your B12 up, your body will break down.

its not just tiredness. B12 deficiency is detrimental to the body. Its a must to get your levels back up

PartnersInCrime · 25/06/2024 20:56

Low Iron and B12 alone or combined will absolutely make you feel like that - speaking from experience. Was your thyroid checked too?
