Would this be a weird thing to do?

Hi

basically I had a blood test from the nurse at my GP surgery recently and received a phone call from the GP 4 hours later to say to go straight to hospital because of the blood test result

would it be weird to get a thank you gift for this, just like some chocolates or biscuits or something to say thank you? I was going to but then I mentioned it to my friend and she said don’t be ridiculous that’s their job and it would make me look a bit weird and now I’m a bit paranoid about it in case I look weird!

I honestly didn’t even know they could do blood test results same day and I’m incredibly grateful they did and that they called me same day (previously I’ve only ever had the day after) as this result could have potentially been life threatening, but especially with how busy everything is in the nhs right now I’m really grateful they did it same day for me and that they called me literally 4 hours later!

It was just a small thank you for all the effort they went to but I’m just completely over thinking it all now after what my friend said! X

No, it's a nice thought, not weird at all!

millerpie · 25/06/2024 13:28

I think it’s a lovely thing to do.

It’s a nice thought, yes it’s the nurse’s job but it’s nice to be thanked for doing a really good job.

Hope you’re ok?

I think as long as it’s just a small token gift like you’ve mentioned then it would be fine as it’s a small gesture of appreciation but a bigger gift would make it an over the top grand gesture.

i used to take a tub of chocolates to my vets at Christmas with a card with a message of thanks in at as well as Christmas greetings. Yes it was their job but they saw my ill (quite complicatedly so) cat regularly and helped her quality of life and gave me more time with her.

FuzzyStripes · 25/06/2024 13:43

It’s a lovely idea and lots of people only get negative feedback, so this will undoubtedly be gratefully received.

KreedKafer · 25/06/2024 13:46

Not weird at all - it’s a nice gesture. Yes, it’s their job, but in any job it’s still nice to know you’re appreciated.

bergamotorange · 25/06/2024 13:46

I'd probably just send a card, but thanking people for doing their job well is not weird, it's a nice thing to do.

Hope all ok with your tests.

Iseeyoupekingduck · 25/06/2024 13:46

It's a lovely thing to do.

I took a thank you card and biscuits in for our GP surgery as they’d been so helpful with my daughters milk allergy just as we were moving!!

Yes I know it’s their job but everyone is so negative to GPs and their staff and I know how nice it is to receive something nice when your in a thankless job!!

I have done similar and gave a card and box of chocs to the fracture clinic. If possible, add the nurses full name on the card. They use feedback for revalidation, and it really helps to have this in writing from patients.

FYI- some blood tests take minutes to run! It depends on the machine and whether the sample is being transported to a larger laboratory, or being tested in house. Such a call doesn't always mean something is drastically wrong. If something returns out of range, its normal to have it re-checked incase it it was an anomaly/machine/assay issue etc. More often than not, the re-checked test is normal. Not always, but very often.

I hope you are doing well now OP.

I would get a card and maybe a small gift.

I would also email the practice manager with positive feedback.

Nostrawberriesandcream · 25/06/2024 13:56

I used to work in a gp practice (as a nurse) it was quite common for patients to send in gifts of chocolates, biscuits, tea, coffee etc. Just bare in mind that it needs to be small in value because a gift can't be seen as anything more than just a gift (eg a bribe). Fifteen years ago we used to have to report any gift over £5 or any cash gifts (not sure what it is now).

Go for it.

We love treats in the staff room.

Ah ok, I didn’t even know any of that at all! I think (IIRC) they said the lab actually phoned them but I might have completely made that up.

yeah I was just thinking a box of m&s biscuits or chocolates or something for the staff room. Glad I’m not being weird haha I was totally over thinking it after my friends reaction!
