To think Waitrose is a rip off?

I do often pop into my local Waitrose, namely because it is the closest supermarket to my house, and on my route home from work. However I don’t really see what it’s selling point is.

I tend to buy branded things, and these are almost always more expensive than the usual supermarkets, unless on offer which admittedly does make it worth a visit.

My local Waitrose is a former Somerfield, so it’s a convenience store layout trying to be a full blown supermarket. The aisles are too narrow, and it’s full of mums with big buggies and elderly people dawdling with trollies.

Theres almost always a queue at the checkout, again because there’s not enough room for a proper sized self checkout area.

The fresh produce and own brand items don’t seem to be noticeably nicer than say Sainsburys, whereas M&S is most certainly a cut above the regular supermarket.

If I want nice or ‘posh’ my go-to is M&S. I just don’t see why it seems to be so revered as the epitome of middle-classness. Seems to be a rip-off to me.

My dad is tighter than a duck's arse, but even he said that the fruit and veg in Waitrose is much better than other supermarkets, as it doesn't go off in 5 minutes like some other shops.
Disclaimer-I actually work there and I love it!

I shopped in Waitrose for years when I lived in England. The one local to where I lived was really old fashioned, as it hadn't been updated, and that was the main reason I liked shopping there. It was like stepping back in time, when all the other supermarkets were modern for the time. I didn't really notice significant price differences back then.

I always pop into Waitrose when I visit DM.

Don’t shop in Waitrose because of the entitled rude customers.

Waitrose is brilliant, they stock stuff you don't see anywhere else.

But if you dont like it, dont go.

I agree.
I'm lucky I have a choice of supermarkets where I live. I don't mind where I go; Waitrose is for specific food products, like their Organic food, certain products you don't find in other supermarkets. Lately they have more offers, prices are the same. Like yogurts and fresh meat. Not keen on their bakery section. If you have time, go early evening. They reduce a lot of food items and you can pick up a bargain!

I love Waitrose. I do a food shop at Waitrose, alternating between Waitrose and Sainsbury’s and the quality of the food from Waitrose is very good. The chicken isn’t full of water and the fruit is usually sweet and lasts longer.

ThinkNotTooMuch · 17/01/2025 23:10

Waitrose is the best!

Gogogo12345 · 17/01/2025 23:17

It's the only full sized supermarket w have in our town. Generally to the big shop at Sainsbury but often pop into waitrose for bits and pieces. Don't find it dreadfully expensive in comparison

Oh their fish is much better than other supermarkets

SixtySomething · 18/01/2025 00:37

I like Waitrose because:

I believe all the chicken in various products is sourced from known, higher welfare farms.
You can still telephone a store directly and ask if they have a particular item in stock.
You can find more unusual and better quality ingredients there.
The staff are friendlier, eg ask if you have had a good day.
You don't need to put a pound in for trolleys.
They have excellent customer service.
The isles are not stacked as high as other supermarkets.
Queues tend to be less long.

So quite a few things really.

You sound a bit rude to me!

Moveoverdarlin · 18/01/2025 00:39

Bloody love Waitrose. I find it easier to park, nice to shop, friendlier staff, nicer meat, fish and veg. Is it more expensive? God yes, but sometimes I think fuck it. I do a big Aldi shop once a month but do lots of top ups at Waitrose.

It works for us, I think the quality is better and I don’t tend to buy branded items. I try to buy minimal UPF and have the most choice at Waitrose whereas it’s a struggle as some other shops.

We get it delivered so the actual shopping experience I can’t comment on, but the delivery experience is great (as it is the other shops I use)

Exactly. Better quality, more organic and more non-UPF choice.

Oh, their cooked mussels in a packet are not really good. Shocked to see they have beards and barnacles. Last few years, their salmon in some sauce say ready to bake, but found out they still got scales on them! Morrisons are better and better packaging.
My husband loves his mussels, in the past we usually clean and wash them before making Moules Mariniere or in garlic butter. Such a shame we don't have a seafood market where we live.
