Asking about Australian Visa

Pottedpalm · 24/06/2024 21:21

I have googled but it’s quite confusing so I hope someone can help. DS wants to apply for a one year Fellowship in Australia; he is a surgeon. Can he take his partner with him? They are not married but will have a young child. Partner works in education.

Wouldn't it just be easier for them to get married?

Pottedpalm · 24/06/2024 22:12

Easier than what?
I’m asking if it’s straightforward as they are.

There is a Mumsnet forum for Australia and New Zealand, perhaps try asking there?

The Fellowship should say what visa status goes with the post and you can work it out from there.

There is also a forum for people living overseas, or thinking about moving abroad.

Good luck!

He's a surgeon, but he's got his mum to find out basic information for him?

MargaretRiver · 24/06/2024 22:39

Yes, the partner would be considered a “de facto spouse”

Oh don’t be ridiculous! It’s me that’s asking the question out of interest.

Thank you; most helpful.

@Pottedpalm I just meant rather than this whole thing about trying to find out if a "partner" would be entitled to a visa and whether things like health insurance would be covered.
I admit I don't know about Australian rules but I know couples that moved to the USA and middle east countries - but before they went they did a quick registrar office thing simply to make the visas etc more easy.
No biggie if they really don't want to be married.

Pottedpalm · 25/06/2024 13:25

@Needmorelego thanks , yes the whole thing looks very complicated. I imagine which ever agency is doing the recruiting will have clear info.

She can get visa as "de facto". They have to prove that they live together though, shared bills, bank accounts, etc. it may be easier due to their joint child.

You don't need to be married to get a "spouse" visa or with a child. The website for visas is immi.homeaffairs.gov.au
