Leaving 17 year old home alone for a week

Pinknelly1982 · 24/06/2024 17:24

I don’t want to but she refuses point blank to come with us on holiday. She moaned we were not going on holidays and now we are. She doesn’t want to come - she wants to stay on her own at home.

She could move out at that age! I left home at 17. What are your concerns?

Createausername1970 · 24/06/2024 17:29

I would say old enough to be left, depending upon the maturity of the 17 year old.

But whether I would WANT to leave a 17 year old on their own in my beloved house and happy that I would come back to find it as I left it, is a whole other kettle of fish.

Arlott · 24/06/2024 17:30

Ha. Yes, that’s true

Pootle23 · 24/06/2024 17:31

Depends if you trust your 17 year old or not. I was left for a week at a time at 16, but this was before social media and I wasn’t a brat and cook cook and care for myself.

StrongandNorthern · 24/06/2024 17:32

I left home at seventeen too.

AGodawfulsmallaffair · 24/06/2024 17:33

I left my ds at 17 for a week. I felt guilty and we were very pleased to see each other when I cane home - but he was fine.

HcbSS · 24/06/2024 17:33

It’s about maturity and disposition, not age.
I would have been fine at 14. My cousin would have trashed the place at 19.

MrsWimpy · 24/06/2024 17:33

Mine is currently at home alone. I'm on holiday!

Mrsjayy · 24/06/2024 17:33

My eldest stopped coming at 17 she managed fine leave her food In the freezer If you are concerned tell a neighbour or friend she's at home and just go.

Ladyj84 · 24/06/2024 17:33

Me and my siblings happily stayed home from 16, we knew what was expected and happily cooked and cleaned

Ilovegoldies · 24/06/2024 17:35

I was left for a month at 17. I didn't have parties though. Is your daughter sensible? I'd get a Ring doorbell and go.

maw1681 · 24/06/2024 17:36

Is she trustworthy? If yes then leave her at home, make sure she has food and some spending money and some emergency numbers just in case. She'll be fine

AmelieTaylor · 24/06/2024 17:38

I left home at 17 too, but I think we were a FAR more able generation.

I agree with @Createausername1970 , perfectly old enough to spend the week alone, but depends very much on the 17 year old if I'd trust them in the house alone!!

I wouldn't be happy she was moaning about 'no holiday' & now there is one she doesn't want to go! But did you include her in deciding on the location & type of holiday? Offer yo let her invite a friend/boyfriend?

Sgtmajormummy · 24/06/2024 17:39

We did it last summer when we went to the other house to do some boring and dirty jobs, so certainly not a holiday. DD was 17.

The only condition was to have max 2 friends at a time.
I got a Hello Fresh box for her to try some new recipes and left her with €50 and an emergency rechargeable debit card.
She had a great time and wants to do it again this year.
It’s good training for when they leave home.

Skyrainlight · 24/06/2024 18:33

Depending on your daughter she should throw a party and trash your house.

CloudywMeatballs · 24/06/2024 18:36

She sounds like a brat, so because of that I wouldn't allow her to stay home alone.

strungouteyes · 24/06/2024 18:37

I mean I moved out to uni at 17. In Scotland she could be married / have a baby / house of her own.
What are you worried about? Parties?

rookiemere · 24/06/2024 18:43

We left DS for a week age 17.

He managed to get covid, eat none of the food I provided and generally looked rather woebegone when we got back. Seemed to handle it better when we went away when he was 18.

Do you have neighbours that you can get to check in occasionally?

He probably did better at 18 not because he was a year older, but because he’d done it once already

Blouson · 24/06/2024 18:46

On her own! Yeah right, assuming any of her friends know it'll be party central. MIght explain the reluctance to go.

itsmylife7 · 24/06/2024 18:46

Totally depends if she going to have wild parties and wreck your house.

At that age I'd have no hesitation in leaving my child at home for a week.

Everygrain · 24/06/2024 18:47

We did with DS at 17 and he even managed to temporarily fix the toilet until we got back when it didn't stop flushing.

TheShellBeach · 24/06/2024 18:47

No chance.
She'll have a party and your house will be trashed.

fieldsofbutterflies · 24/06/2024 18:49

I was left home alone at that age - it was fine. That was only twenty odd years ago too so not the dark ages Grin

Sprogonthetyne · 24/06/2024 18:50

Move your breakables somewhere safe for the inevitable party, and make it clear you expect any mess to be tidied before you get back
