Sharing pavements with cyclists and scooters is frightening

Particularly the proliferation of motorised scooters and bicycles, and delivery people using these modes of transport and needing to be quick.

See the right of children to run freely on pavements and precincts, and people in general to walk without needing to be on high alert has been eroded.

What’s my point? Why is this considered to be reasonable. Why not just declare full on Mad Max.

We have shared use pavements, I've never seen a motorised scooter on one. E bikes are limited to 16 mph and aren't that common here

I don't think it's good enough to take an inappropriate pavement that's too narrow, too many obstructions etc and say "hey presto, we've designated this as a shared space" and then pretend everything is fine. They need to be designed properly with safety in mind.

Indeed, too many councils think that they can do active travel on the cheap by sticking up a few blue signs.

I am a cyclist and inconsiderate cyclists on pavements annoy me. I will use shared use paths, but I always ride sensibly and I hate the fact that people lump all cyclists together and assume we're all idiots which creates a hostile environment and makes cycling less safe for those of us who do ride sensibly.

Completely agree with this

We have a pathetic exhibitionist loser someone in our area who rides around on one of those electric unicycle things.

You're not in North Tyneside, are you? We have one who weaves in and out of pedestrians at high speed. I'm constantly hoping he'll have to do an emergency stop and dent the pavement with his face.

No , not there, but it is good to know that I am not alone in my finger crossing wish for injury and pain on these idiots. I bet there are lots of us seething secretly!

°Whilst I’m sure the majority of cyclists are fine, I’ve come across so many that are smug and arrogant and seem to think they should be worshipped for saving the world.^

It was a bit of an education three years ago, when we took our daughter to London for a holiday. Blimey, people complain about them round our way, but I realised it pales in comparison.

Cyclists just shooting through crowds on a green man, narrowly avoiding being hit on a zebra, with an accompanying, "Fucking idiot!" and a middle finger.

loropianalover · 25/06/2024 10:09

My pet peeve is people who cycle on the path with their knees facing outward from the bike!! They take up so much room.

I live in a seaside village that’s very pedestrianised for tourists so we do have nice big paths that should have room for everyone but I just want to shove their knees in place.

Mountainhowl · 25/06/2024 10:10

Drives me mad particularly at the beach on the promenade, it's a wide open path away from the dangers of roads, we should be able to let kids wander a little without fear of them being squashed by an e-scooter doing 15-20mph!

BusySittingDown · 25/06/2024 11:14

Please don't get me started. I fucking hate cyclists.

I'm deaf and I can't hear your fucking bell either.

The other day I very nearly murdered an older teenage boy who got too close to me and pulled a wheely 😡. He nearly hit me and he scared the shit out of me! I stuck two fingers up at him as he rode past (I shouldn't have) and he stopped and apologised as he realised I was deaf.

CammyChameleon · 25/06/2024 11:34

I find most pavement cyclists round here to be ok. They're usually quite slow and careful. I recently had a man apologise for being on the pavement as we passed each other and explain that the road is just too scary (he's right, drivers round here are awful).

The escooters are a damn scourge though, they go very fast on pavements, even round corners where you can't see if there's another pedestrian coming. I've also been shouted at and mocked for not realising one had crept up behind me as they're so quiet compared to normal scooters.

School run car drivers are the worst though. Lurching on and off pavements full of small children. There was a big FB drama a while back when a pedestrian parent's child was nearly hit by a "poor nan" lurching her car up and the pedestrian called her a stupid bitch - somehow the idiot driver was a victim and the pedestrian was satan?

Bruisername · 25/06/2024 12:42

The quality of driving seems to have deteriorated over the past 20 years. Is it poorer enforcement?

So you hate all cyclists, even doctors that cycle to work?

I've nearly been bonneted by cars at zebra crossings in London. But then I've also watched pedestrians cross the road whenever they like. The conclusion I came to is that everyone on London's streets is a lunatic.

A doctor isn’t morally superior or more important than anyone else. If the doctor rides like a dick then he’s a dick. And should know better as would undoubtedly be seeing the result of dickish cycling behaviour

lechatnoir · 25/06/2024 14:10

I'm a cyclist - not a sport Lycra type but someone who uses her bike to get around and the problem are not cyclists per se but 3 fold:

1.Selfish arrogant cyclists (especially couriers. & teenagers IME)

  1. Lack of police to dole out punishments for above wanker cyclists jumping lights, riding on pavement and being a menace.
  1. The roads - majority of roads are simply not safe for cyclists due to bad/aggressive/impatient car drivers AND pot holes.

We should be encouraging people out of their cars (if not for the climate or to save money then to tackle the obesity epidemic & mental health crisis sweeping our country!) but you need investment in quality infrastructure and the government sticking plasters or shared use paths or painted lines are utterly useless and cause more harm than good.

This is a bit of a soapbox topic for me as I can't drive so rely on my bike but I will just finish by saying shared use paths can work as long as cyclists are using it at sensible/moderate speeds & being courteous to pedestrians by ringing a bell and slowing or stopping to give way. I'm not sure whether the highway code covers paths but certainly on the road the pedestrian has priority over the cyclist & clearer signage would help communicate this.

Allfur · 25/06/2024 13:11

Yes.

ESPECIALLY the doctor who cycles to work! 🙄

Shut up. Of course I don't hate ALL cyclists, it's just the majority who think that they own the pavements and footpaths. They go really fast, don't slow down when there's a pedestrian there.

Being deaf I don't know that they're there until they've basically parked their front wheel up my arse crack.

I can't hear you shout and I can't hear your bell. I don't have eyes in the back of my head so do me a favour and slow down and then I'll gladly move out of the way!

A doctor who's job is to save lives, who cycles lawfully and respectfully - are they to be hated?

Some cyclists are annoying and dangerous, but sweeping statements about hating fucking cyclists doesn't help, most cyclists are law abiding citizens just trying to get through the day

Yeah but I didn't say ALL cyclists in my post did I?

Any cyclist who cycles respectfully is fine, whether they be a doctor or whatever else.

The majority of cyclists that I encounter on my daily walks are pains in the ass! I don't think they are doctors cycling to work as it's usually around 2.45 pm.

Bruisername · 25/06/2024 16:31

This falls into the ‘Not all men’ way of thinking

not all cyclists are dicks but a lot of them are and I’m not going to forgive the crap ones because there are also good ones - especially when they could cause serious injury.

and I’m fed up of having to try and lift the heavy and unwieldy hire bikes out of the way because they are blocking pavements for prams/wheelchairs etc

DdraigGoch · 26/06/2024 00:26

@BusySittingDown majority? I'm trying to recall the last time that I saw an adult cycling on a non-shared footway (let alone taking full possession of it). I would suggest that you are remembering the badly-behaved minority and overlooking the law-abiding majority who go down the carriageway (or cycleway where they are actually provided) with no fuss.
