So I have been drinking a bottle of wine about 4 nights of the week and decided I need to stop. I have not touched a drink now for 7 days and not found it particularly hard to be honest as I have my mind set on it. Anybody else given up? I realised I was feeling groggy in the morning and do not want this to develop as I have young ids who need me. How did I get into that situation in the first place it is just so bloody easy!

Do I need to cut it out forever? I have other alcohol in the house such as beers/spirits/cheap wines but I only like the expensive stuff, this is one of the reasons for giving up.

I don't have a good relationship with alcohol. I read this article in the times (hopefully you can read it) and have signed up for a consultation after doing some research myself. It works by stopping the dopamine hit you get from alcohol and therefore reducing the craving.

@jackstini It’s surprising that there isn’t a good AF wine by now. I like an AF lager, quite a few are good. The best AF wine I’ve tried is usually a Prosecco.

Good for you op
I like a drink but I tend to buy mini bottles or cans as a weekend treat and sometimes open a bottle of wine (but not often)

I was drinking up to 3 bottles of wine a day, which horrifies me now. Initially I was only going to stop for a few days because I needed a general anaesthetic but I decided I couldn’t keep on pressing the self - destruct button. That was at the end of January & I haven’t looked back. Lost over 2 stone, sleep way better & I am so much calmer generally which really helps. I don’t tend to socialise much these days but I’m quite happy with an alcohol free gin or Fevertree tonic water if I do go out. Agree about alcohol free wine so will continue the search! Good luck OP but I would advise you to quit altogether rather than stop then try to drink less than before as it all too easily sneaks up again. Plus you will save so much money!

I stopped drinking 6 years ago and it is the best thing I've ever done.

I'm healthier, less tired, exercise regularly. Take much better care of myself. Genuinely the best decision.

Stick with it, it just gets better!

Do you still go on nights out etc with the girls?

No I don't.
But if I do go out for a meal or to a pub I have no problem drinking sparkling water. Or occasionally non alcoholic beer. I keep some of that in the fridge at home and enjoy a bottle now and then. I never have been a drinker of soft drinks.

I think so long as you have supportive friends who aren't going to try and persuade you to drink when you are out with them you will get used to just not drinking. You might even find some of them will join you in not drinking alcohol because you might find you are doing what they have been thinking about doing.
