XL bullies

I don't know if it's because I've seen a few threads on here regarding them, but it's really playing on my mind lately.
I'm just very frightened of these dogs. And even more frightened of the growing attitude in their owners who seem to take great pleasure from flouting the rules and letting them off lead unmuzzled.
My dc is of an age where they're quite young but old enough to go to parks and out and about his own. It genuinely scares me that he'll come across one. Or I will while out with my little ones.
I realise the world is full of dangers but the brutal nature of their attacks really really scares me.
I wish they didn't exist.
I probably sound neurotic but they just send me cold. Hoping with the breeding laws they will gradually die out.

Yey another dog bashing thread. There hasn't been one for at least a day.

Trot off with your nonsense.

The OP is expressing genuine fears about one ‘breed’ of dog that has a terrifying reputation for potentially murderous behavior.

Ratsoffasinkingsauage · 23/06/2024 23:21

@fluffypooch The massive balls were a huge clue.

GrazingSheep · 23/06/2024 23:25

@Zwellers
Is there a quota that has to be adhered to?

AmateurDad · 23/06/2024 23:25

In my part of north London I have seen maybe three in the last year and the only one not muzzled was being walked very late at night in a quiet area where other people were unlikely to be. Obviously if an XL Bully is seen being walked around in a public area unmuzzled the police should be contacted straight away.

daffodilandtulip · 23/06/2024 23:25

DD18 who is teeny and looks about 12 said she was walking the other day and could hear one barking at some younger girls. She was saying she was trying to decide what she should do if the younger girls got attacked - help or run - and decided either would get her killed anyway. These should not be our worries!

fluffypooch · 23/06/2024 23:25

@FriendlyNeighbourhoodAccountant my dog is neutered and still has his balls 🤷🏻‍♀️ so that makes no sense.

@Herewegoagainandagainandagain I think you should stop with tarnishing everyone with the same brush. Some of us paid a lot of money for professional training from them being pups, have followed all the guidelines and done everything asked. All breeds have the capacity to maul or kill. A Jack Russel killed a baby in the town I live in not so long ago. The main problem is people are too trusting in their animals and have almost humanised them. Any child should not be left unsupervised with any dog ever.

sandstormsy · 23/06/2024 23:26

I have always been a dog lover and would tend to subscribe to "it's the upbringing not the dog" in lots of cases but these dogs are something else.

I remember one of the cases where two adult men were killed. It chilled me. How can it legal to own a pet that can kill two adult men fighting for their lives? Even when being hit by weapons these dogs aren't deterred.

At that point why am I not allowed a pet grizzly bear at home with me? He's very friendly. It's not my fault other grizzlies maul people to death. Mine would never do that. He's a family bear.

I do get scared taking my toddler for walks in case I see one of these. It's the knowing that there's nothing I could do and just like that we'd both be dead.

XelaM · 23/06/2024 23:27

I'm scared of them too and I adore dogs. Our little dog nearly got attacked by an XL bully (unmuzzled but on a lead - but owner couldn't control him at all because the dog was so strong!)

Do you genuinely think you could fight off your dog @fluffypooch if he decided to attack you?

brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr · 23/06/2024 23:29

All dogs a toddler couldn’t beat in a fight should be banned.

fluffypooch · 23/06/2024 23:29

@Sasqwatch no but I couldn't fight off a Labrador or German Shepard either or any other similar size breed 🤷🏻‍♀️

Waitingfordoggo · 23/06/2024 23:30

Um, @fluffypooch , your dog is not neutered!

FTPM1980 · 23/06/2024 23:31

They can't be all that common
I have never seen one
My point being not that they don't exist but that being scared of a potential attack seems a little premature.

No point hoping they will die out...breeders will just develop something as big and with similar look to fill the gap

@XelaM I'm sorry if it was scary & very glad your dog wasn't hurt or killed, but what stopped it attacking your dog?

Do you mean your dog is chemically castrated via hormonal implant, or that he simply has a scrotum? My cat wasn’t neutered until he was four and still has a sad, shrivelled sack which might look like a pair of nads to someone who didn’t know he was neutered.

But WHY - out of the hundreds and hundreds of breeds out there - would you want to get an XL bully of all breeds? What possible reasons can there be to want to pick this as a breed to own?

My bad he had a vasectomy so was just cut. Balls still there.

This is something I’d like to know - what makes some one choose this dog - I mean this in the most genuine way
what exactly is appealing about them?

fluffypooch · 23/06/2024 23:38

@XelaM you say that like he's the only breed I have lol I have 5 dogs 4 different breeds. You like what you like I suppose.

massive balls?

FuckTheClubUp · 23/06/2024 23:38

There’s a woman who lives in my area and owns a XL bully (you can never be 100% on the breed but I’m sure that’s what it is) and a pitbull. The dogs are fucking terrifying and she often has them walking without a lead.

She’s a very petite woman too so God forbid an attack happens, she certainly wouldn’t be able to grab one of the dogs. I think all dogs should have a muzzle and be on a lead when out and about in the public space tbh

dunno, don’t think there has been a dog scare with a raft of attacks like this since pit bulls in the 90s

I agree. But some don't want to put a muzzle on there cute teddy bear looking dog. It doesn't go with the aesthetic they are going for 🙄 also they like the attention too much. No one wants to pet a muzzled dog.

A Belgian Malinois is the "family pet" that killed that girl. It's one of the most aggressive guard breeds there is and anyone who gets these dogs as "family pets" needs their heads examined. Just like XL bullies or any Pitbull-type dog that is stronger than any human.

We have a toy breed dog and no one is scared of him because he is small. He happens to be a sweetheart, but even if he wasn't any adult could easily overpower him in 30 seconds. Why would anyone want anything in their house that is so much stronger than them that they have absolutely no way of controlling when things go wrong?!?

Edited

Malinois are fantastic working dogs but I agree that they have no place as a family pet as their brains and bodies are simply too busy for the average pet home. Way too much ‘dog’.

My friends have a retired police Malinois (and years of experience with the breed) and he is a lovely dog, but he just likes any excuse to use his teeth! Every time I see him, he gets so excited that he nips at whatever bit of skin he can find, although he has never actually bitten with purpose since his retirement. However, I would never want to see him around a young child as what is an affectionate nip on me could be a devastating bite on a child. They know what they’re doing with him though and I trust that he would never be put in a position where he could harm anyone. I know when I see him that I’ll get a toothy kiss and I accept it! After the initial frenzied kissing, he flops in my lap like a cat and stays there. Still wouldn’t have him anywhere near children.

It sounds like you have an XL bully? If you don't mind me asking, what would you do if it attacked you?
