Would you be miffed at work colleagues comments?

Hiya. I think I'm being overly sensitive but a little comment from my colleagues recently has kinda got to me as it got a little personal....
So, I work in an environment with proper banter. Have done so for over 20yrs so kinda thick-skinned.
We have a team chat. For background info, I'm part-time.
On the team chat, colleagues were taking the pee by me working P/T by saying (who is my name) whilst literally sitting a foot away from me. Then one says the large brunette (I'm blonde) where another colleague piped up, "less of the brunette" 😣 Approx 200-300 other colleagues have access to the chat so it made me feel really embarrassed. Would you be upset about it? I'm not tall, and a little overweight at the moment.
I'd really appreciate your thoughts. Thsnks

Do they genuinely not know who you are? Are they not aware you are in the chat? I'd have replied "I'm in this chat and I'll stick my hand up now as I'm in the office" patronise the shit out of them

lazyarse123 · 23/06/2024 18:42

I would be upset but I would ask if they know the difference between banter and rudeness. We have a bantering kind of workplace but it's never mean.

Wordsmithery · 23/06/2024 18:45

I think banter can be fun without being personal. And this was definitely personal, which is an absolute no-no in a work setting. Tell your colleagues that you're not happy. I'd expect a wholehearted apology.
FWIW, I'd be hugely upset in your place.

200-300 colleagues have access to the chat? What kind of team chat has that many participants?
Rise above it, keep a diary in case they continue.

They know exactly who I am. I've been working on their team for a year! Just being extra dicks that day.

Who in this day & age doesn’t realise it’s rude & unprofessional to refer to someone as “the large one?” Theres banter then there’s just fucking rude.
If you’re blonde & they said brunette are you sure that persons got you mixed up with someone else?
The police have been in really hot water lately for their offensive & misogynistic “banter” so I’m surprised it still goes on.

I know a lot of police officers I’d suggest leaving the chat because they never go well

They knew it was me as there are only 2 women on my team. The other is a red-head.
You'd think this behaviour would've stopped but my force is the worst in the country for this type of behaviour (say no more) The stories I could tell you wouldn't be believed such as a line-manager continually being on the phone to HR insisting I didn't qualify for maternity leave when I gave birth at 24 weeks and subsequently lost him. I've just had enough but everything gets brushed under the carpet.

That’s disgraceful. These are meant to be our protectors. No wonder people have lost faith. If I were you I’d be changing career from what you said and I’d be whistle blowing too. It’s not good enough. You don’t have to put up with derogatory and sexist pricks who hide under the “banter” and the way you were treated after what happened to you is abhorrent. Do what’s right for you x

I'm amazed the management haven't strongly discouraged these work team chat groups, after some if the truly dire publicity the force has had regarding them lately. Depressing in a way that they don't feel a need to provide strong guidance on what's acceptable by now...

I work in another industry, where that kind of comment would be seen as very clearly inappropriate and a matter for disciplinary warning, and worse for any repetition.

It's terrible huh!? I do have a plan to go as it's just awful but finances dictate ATM unfortunately. I took it to ET but the solicitor's said there was no evidence as it was all verbal. I have taken screenshots of the chat though just as evidence. I'm just fed up of being picked on because I'm quiet.

My line manager e-mailed me after seeing the comments telling me to "give them a kick!"
