Ring doorbell: can ex set up an account?

IceCreamWoes · 23/06/2024 16:39

I've bought a ring doorbell and have set up 2 factor authorisation. Would this stop someone from being able to download the app and set up an account? I'm concerned my ex (who is v computer savvy) will be able to see who is coming out/in and can't see what's stopping him from managing to log in...?

Have you ensured they still don't have access to your wifi or got key logger to your phone or laptop etc?

RandomMess · 23/06/2024 16:53

Have you any evidence that they are still getting information or access to things?

beckybarefoot · 23/06/2024 16:55

to set up a ring doorbell account you need an email and a password, you also need the QR code which is on the device.

i guess if he knew your email account and password then he would be able to access your account online...

perhaps just to be on the safe side change your email address and password..

IceCreamWoes · 23/06/2024 17:00

Is there anyway he could download the app, use his email address to make an account, scan the QR code and just link a completely separate account to it? And I wouldn't know?

I don't have evidence that he has access to things, no, but just want to guard against it. I have bought the ring door bell to protect against him coming and going as he pleases. He hasn't lived here for over 2 years but now is exercising his right to turn up whenever as he has been told he can by his solicitor.

I have changed WiFi password but he will be at the house for childcare once a week so I don't feel I can unreasonably prevent him from accessing the WiFi long term.

no. unless he gave you the ring doorbell and opened the box and scanned the QR code first...

Why do you feel you need to provide WIFI for him?

BlueMum16 · 23/06/2024 17:05

Not sure on the doorbell. He doesn't need access to your WiFi though when collecting kidsso just don't let him.

Is he seeing the kids in the house? If not he can remain on the door step.

IceCreamWoes · 23/06/2024 17:06

Yes, he does school pick up and looks after the kids at the house until I get back from work quite late one day a week.

I bought the doorbell and can hide the QR on the box, but not the actual doorbell itself.

It sounds like you need an occupation order and to either find alternate childcare or he looks after the DC elsewhere and you deal with them getting to bed late etc.

beckybarefoot · 23/06/2024 17:11

this all sounds very complicated. why is he putting the kids to bed in your house? why can't he do that at his own house?

IceCreamWoes · 23/06/2024 17:13

I'm getting legal advice about the occupancy order already. I want to keep things as normal as poss for time being as don't want to show my hand and he starts getting cagey or hiding things in the house etc. There is a plan. I've contacted nanny's in the area for full time childcare.

In the meantime I'm just stressed that the doorbell will be accessed.

A bit of alcohol and wipe the qr code off the doorbell

RandomMess · 23/06/2024 17:19

What does the doorbell say about number of account holders?

forrestgreen · 23/06/2024 17:22

Use the tiny screw to close the doorbell up. Is the qr code on the inside?

IceCreamWoes · 23/06/2024 17:25

This is a good point as Google says one account but you add shared users.

I've changed my email password a few times but I always wonder whether he has hacked still. I am paranoid.

The two step authenticator should help as he won't have access to my phone...? Unless there's an app or something he can access?

Set up an email address and password that is only for the use of the door bell, and destroy the QR code?

JeepJeepJeep · 23/06/2024 17:25

If you set up the account first. You have control over who has access to the info. You have to invite people for them to be able to view.

Just make sure you have a really safe password on the ring account that he wouldn't know.

Yes maybe I should have done this but used my normal one already

we have ringdoor bell, and hubby has the app on his phone, he logs in on his app using my log in details.

you can't have multiple users i don't think

FuzzyStripes · 23/06/2024 17:28

Why don’t you call Ring IT support and make sure from their end they can confirm nobody else has access and see if they can place a block on anyone else viewing.

Don’t give him the wifi password. He might be there for the evening, but I’m sure he has his own data that he can use.

jeaux90 · 23/06/2024 17:30

Ring support line is actually really good. Why don't you call them.

IceCreamWoes · 23/06/2024 17:31

Good idea, thank you

Biggest risk if he set up a key logger or similar on one of your devices. Have you had them checked/bought hall new ones, ensured he can't access your WiFi?

IceCreamWoes · 23/06/2024 18:42

He could access the WiFi until this weekend. I have run cc cleaner and doesn't seem to be any apps running in the background. Would that pick it up?
