Did you clean and sand the walls before painting?

AmelieTaylor · 23/06/2024 15:02

Are they freshly plastered walls?

it looks like you didn't do a mist coat? (Paint mixed with water so that it soaks into the plaster and leaves a thin paint layer for the full fat paint to stick to)

It's a rented house: I wouldn't be surprised if they never did a mist coat

Did you clean, sand, wipe down before painting? The little bubbles look like either bubbles or bit of debris that was on the brush/wall

I gave them a wipe like I always do. Maybe I should have done more washing of the walls. Oh god. What shall I do now. Shall I try and peel it off. Or... I want to cry! I did all the woodwork it looks lovely. The first cost look lovely when I went to bed last night

I've done a lot of painting living in rented places all my life . This never happened

You shouldn’t need to sand down walls if they’ve been properly prepped previously, it does look like there hasn’t been a mist coat so this will keep happening. The correct way to go from here is to keep peeling and start from scratch with a mist coat

Youcancallmeirrelevant · 23/06/2024 15:09

It can also dep3nd on what type of paint was used ont he wall before, especially if you didn't lightly sand the wall.

You can either peel it all off or pi k a point and stop but you'll need to sand the edgea of the peel to get rid of any lines

This happens when you paint Matt over a vinyl paint. Is this a possibility?

I thought it was the big standard magnolia paint. I am using a silk as I thought it was better for wiping off marks. I'm wondering now if the magnolia was painted on top of plaster with a mist coat. Am gonna leave most of it with one coat. It looks cleaner tbh. If did. I guess for this area I will peel and then sand and then mist. Ffs this house is actually so bad

Is it an old house?

if it is then it could be that it has been painted previously with distemper. If that’s the case you have a problem as it will have to be removed or sealed with an appropriate paint. Painting with emulsion over distemper will result in the emulsion peeling away, much as yours has done.

AmelieTaylor · 23/06/2024 15:20

Oh god, it's a nightmare! Given it was already painted I'm assuming the two paints are not compatible.

It's not that old. I'd say 1990s. I think maybe it wasn't painted properly with a mist coat. It's the biggest wall in the hall. Can I sand it wit my electric sander. Some of it is easy enough to pull off in big sheets but some is stuck on more

Found out it was built in 2002. I've painted other rooms and not had this problem.

This is my bathroom. I'm still procrastinating sorting it out as it's going to take frigging ages to sand it all off.

ILikeItWhatIsIt · 23/06/2024 17:09

You can let it dry then lightly sand the problem/peeling areas, scrape off if really lifting. Then put zinsser peel and stop on it. Paint over when dry. Same thing happened to mine and that did the trick. Zinsser products are excellent!
