Teeth damage from gastroscopy?

I’m due to have a gastroscopy this week for the first time and I’ve just read about the risk of tooth damage from the mouth guard. I have read a few horror stories of people waking up with their teeth chipped.

I have had a bridge for all my upper front teeth for the last 15 years after an accident and as per my dentists instructions I have not bitten down on these teeth in all that time (all food I tear or cut first which works totally fine for me) to keep it structurally sound

I am absolutely terrified of anything ever happening to my teeth and have spent my life being so careful with them, I am now feeling really stressed that I am going to wake up from the procedure and they will be chipped or worse.

From my understanding it’s from biting down on the mouth guard while sedated that can cause the damage and/or from being knocked by tbe equipment?

AIBU to be so worried about this… Has anyone with dental bridge/crowns had a gastroscopy? Was there any damage?

People sometimes choose to have gastroscopy without sedation, e g mothers who'll be collecting children from school etc.

Speak to the medical people rather than relying on heresay.

I had it without sedation twice, no issues. I have a small jaw, so used the kids mouth guard, maybe you could use that if suitable?

I’ve done them and had one under sedation. I would not want one without sedation.
I know some people are fine. Many are not.
Talk to them about your worries .

Same here, totally fine, no tooth damage or danger thereof experienced.

I work in theatres and we ask people to point out any teeth they might be worried about , the anaesthetic nurse and anaesthetist will take great care to make sure your teeth are protected . I’ve only ever seen tooth damage once and that was in someone very sick with teeth that were already wobbly .

I had one with partial sedation, you could explore that.

Thanks for the replies, I am going to call the department to find out more information but I’m just so nervous. Hopefully they can ease my worries.

As pp I've had two recently without sedation, it's was fine. I quite liked them, nearly fell asleep on the second one.
