Moving to Brislington

Donetrying1 · 23/06/2024 13:25

I am looking for some help please.
l live by myself in a very small house in Winchester, l’m in my sixties but young outlook(l hope!)
My 35 year old daughter lives in Brislington in Bristol-she is not well at all both mentally and physically and it’s worrying the life out of me to the point l’m thinking of moving there to offer support. I don’t know the area as l only ever go to her house and come back home again. I know it’s not like Winchester, but does anyone who knows it, knows bits to avoid or bits that are nice or where l could find out that information from. I don’t mind a bit of life but l don’t want to find myself in a ‘notoriously bad neighbour’ because l didn’t do any research, thanks so much for any replies!

I know Bristol a bit as I have a family member there. I like Bristol itself a lot but can't say I rate Brislington at all. I think of it mainly as new build estates and industrial parks - and lots and lots of traffic. In your shoes I would look at other parts of Bristol or nearby satellite towns/villages first tbh. But maybe I'm wrong and it has nice parts or hidden depths - hopefully someone will be along soon who knows more. I hope things improve for your daughter. Flowers

Hi OP - I lived in Brislington for 8 years and it's a nice enough area (wouldn't describe it as new build estates and industrial parks). I moved to Upper Knowle, which is next to Brislington, is family friendly. Whereabouts in Brislington does your daughter live? Happy for you to PM

You want to find somewhere in Sandy Park or closer to Totterdown.
I like Brislington personally

I lived near Sandy park in Brislington for years. It's really lovely there. Arnos vale park and the cemetery are lovely for walking and the number 1 bus service to town is very convenient

Hey OP, I lived in Bristol for 25 years, then moved just south of Bristol, now moving back in again so thinking a lot about areas of Bristol myself right now. We're looking at Stockwood which is just south of Bris and Whitchurch which is just on the west side of Stockwood. Are you looking to buy? I'm not hugely familiar with Bris itself but have pockets of knowledge of some other areas.
Bits of Stockwood and Whitchurch are fine and reasonably cheap and near Bris. Parts of Bedminster and Southville are nice but a bit pricier. Totterdown is lovely as a pp says, also a bit pricier. There are bits of Knowle and Whitchurch I'd avoid on the advice of my adult DD who lives in Bedminster. I don't know how right she is but I trust that she has my best interests at heart!
North Bristol is all pricier so it depends on your budget/circumstances and how much your DD wants or needs to stick to being near or in Bris.
Hope that's helpful.

Brislington is nice OP - mainly Victorian terrace streets. There are some nature reserves within easy walk, it’s not rough, by Bristol standards anyway.

I guess I've only been through the horrid bits! Apologies for any offence given!

Donetrying1 · 24/06/2024 13:37

Thank you all so much for all the replies.
l will need to live near the shops and transport as l don’t drive.
l think on the whole it all sounds promising and no one caused any offence, l’m just grateful for honesty.
l think what l might do is go and rent a b&b for a night or 2 and have a look around for myself. I suspect it will take a while to get used to though, wherever l choose!

OP, there’s a property called, I think, Fox House, on the outskirts of Brislington. It’s a manor house converted into flats , it always looks like a lovely place to live, big communal grounds. The management charges are high though. I’ll see if I can find the name, but if a place comes up for sale there might be worth a look?

Lucy807 · 24/06/2024 13:45

OP just don't stay in Arnos vale hotel or whatever it's called!
