Lymph nodes

ve had a lump on my neck for 1 week now guessing it's a lymph node. However I'm not unwell. My main question is is a lymph node supposed to feel lumpy? Or is supposed to be just 1 smooth lump?

It may be an indication of atheroschleroma. I had the same thing, turns out despite no signs and syptoms, or risk factors for heart disease (not obese/anti-exercise), it was farty plaque build up, so am now on statins.

Not trying to panic you, but worth getting it checked out anyway

Lymph nodes usually come in groups so you may be feeling two or more lymph nodes at the same time.

If you've only had it a week and no other symptoms I would personally leave it another couple of weeks and if it's still there go and see a GP just to be on the safe side.

I have palpable lymph nodes under both armpits and some in my neck and have had them for ages and scans confirm that they're normal, just prominent lymph nodes.

Hopefully your right and I'm feeling two! However I'm pretty sure it's just the one, the bumpiness is fused together, there doesn't seem to be any separation between them. Would I still be worth waiting the extra weeks even with the irregular margins?

I've never heard of this before! Did you find out from raised uneven lymph nodes?

Yes, in my neck.

How long did you wait and watch before seeing the GP?

If you're really worried then just see the GP (if you can get an appointment). But I thought the one under my arm was an irregular lump (found it while I was on holiday so that was fun, especially with a history of breast cancer) but it is just two nodes very close together that feels like one lumpy one. I saw it on the ultrasound. They're like bunches of grapes so not always easy to tell if you're feeling one lump or two!

Lymphadenopathy is the term for lymph nodes swelling. They are part of the immune system, and swell as a result of something going on, which could be a whole host of things.

It is entirely possible to feel just one.

You may have had an illness where the nodes were enlarged, and they may not have settled back to their original size, which are then more prominent and when patients are likely to notice them.

Monitor the node, how you feel etc. If you're feeling it in the left supraclavicular space (above left collar bone), it may be worth getting checked out by the GP.

Well, i had previously had breast cancer on that side, so I left it a few days to see if it went down. It didn't so I went to dr. He felt it,ndidn't think it was a lymph issue, but sent me for ultrasound, which diagnosed atheroscleroma
Wotrth getting it checked to allay your worries

I had enlarged lymph nodes in my groin, which turned out to be cancer, squamous cell carcinoma. Get it checked out.

I think if you had a sore throat, runny nose, ear pain etc it would be fine to wait and see over a few weeks. But it sounds like that's not the case so worth going for an examination.

Thomasina79 · 24/06/2024 07:14

I had a lump in my neck which an ENT consultantsaid should be removed and examined. It turned out to be a harmless lipoma. When I asked the consultant if I could ignore this if it came back he said no and that I should always get any lumps examined.

so for reassurance I would get this checked out

fieldsofbutterflies · 24/06/2024 07:20

Please get any funny lumps and bumps checked out, even if you think it's something benign.

I have a fatty lump on my thigh that was quickly and easily diagnosed as a lipoma - but as they can be signs of cancer, you really do need to be checked out by a professional. It's likely to be nothing but it could equally save your life.

My GP surgery saw me within 24h and the doctor was so nice and reassuring.

Yes I am not or have not been unwell, the only thing that's bothering me recently it's itchy skin.
