Hand in notice by email when on mat leave?

Hi all,

Hope you're having a nice weekend.

I'll firstly mention my employer didn't top up maternity pay so I won't have to pay anything back. I have been interviewing for part time positions that match the childcare available. I've also split from partner during leave so my personal circumstances have changed.

Is it really bad to hand in my notice by email while on maternity leave? I plan to give six weeks notice rather than the four required.

My company has been taken over by a new owner since I left. I've sent two emails about my annual leave and updating my qualifications (I studied during maternity leave) and they didn't reply.

It feels really cold so I'm tempted to just hand in leave by email as I'm not even sure who to call anymore.

Would that annoy an employer? I am worried about a future reference.

better not to burn your bridges

then will this effect your maternity leave / pay from the current company especially if its the company covering it ?

Absolutely fine. They've ignored your emails so I'd attach those to it too to make sure you get a response or acknowledgement to them, and make sure you know your holiday entitlement that will need paying and pop that in there too.

References these days are just dates of employment and confirmation of job title, nothing more

If they haven't covered maternity pay I think emailing is fine

Edited

depends on how its perceived, especially when its via email etc, depends on the company culture and management etc rightly or wrongly so to speak

My maternity leave (state benefits only) is due to end in six weeks so I wouldn't be starting a new job until after that @OperationDinnerout

I can’t imagine resigning in any other way to be honest. And I’m nearly 60.

I handed in my notice whilst on maternity leave. I went down the old-fashioned route and did it in writing by post. I sent it recorded delivery so I had concrete proof that it had been received.

I would call and tell manager verbally, then follow up with email to manager and HR referencing the call.

Thank you @WeAllHaveWings. I don't have a manager, just an owner but I could arrange a call with owner if emailing seems rude
