Had to take DS (5) to hospital this morning as his asthma got bad and he needed to be put on a nebuliser. It's been bad all week but the hayfever really got to him last night and set his asthma off. They gave him steroids and told us to do ten puffs every 4 hours and straight back to a&e if it gets bad again. Currently sat in bed with him as I don't dare leave him. He's just had another 10 puffs an hour ago but is still breathing faster than normal and sucking in at the neck.
I thought we were over the worst of his asthma for this year. It's normally the winter when he really struggles as every cough and cold ends up on his chest. But no, this year it's hayfever that's kicking his butt.
Just want my little man to be able to catch a break!

Sending sympathies, I'm pregnant and can't take my usual multitude of medications for my hayfever. Yesterday and last night were really bad, I was up from 2-5 sneezing and blowing my nose and then up at 6:30 with my little one, pollen must be high right now :(

asthmashmasthma · 22/06/2024 20:40

@justanotherlaura sorry to hear you are suffering too! It's supposed to get even higher from now until Wednesday which is really worrying me as I'm not sure how much DS can take. He's on prescription anti histamine, steroid nose spray and eye drops but non of it is helping!

I'm sorry your DS is suffering so much. My friend's 3 year old ended up in hosp 2 nights with his asthma triggered by hay-fever too.

I also suffer and can totally relate. I'm so sick of it :( it feels like it gets worse every year!

Hope your little boy feels better soon ❤️

slipperypenguin · 22/06/2024 20:43

What anti histamine is he on? Had it made at difference? We have found different ones affect / are more useful for some
People than others

asthmashmasthma · 22/06/2024 20:46

@GuineaPigPosie yes it does seem to get worse each year!

@slipperypenguin I can't remember the name of it but it is prescribed by the dr. It's one he can take twice a day as the ones over the counter he could only have once a day and they didn't even touch the sides.

Just really hoping tonight doesn't end up in another hospital visit!

Yep pollen is very high right now. I have taken a nose spray, eye drops and a tablet and feel like I have a bad cold. Even my husband is suffering (he denies having hayfever but is always bad when the reading is very high). Why are we allergic to outside?

asthmashmasthma · 22/06/2024 21:12

@BashfulClam exactly!! How can so many people be allergic to being outside! Surely they should have invented something to cure it by now lol

i’m getting a hazmat suit!

Out of interest are you in a city?
I’ve been finding when I go somewhere very rural my hayfever calms down. It doesn’t seem to be as simple as pollen, but pollen and air quality together. I’m surrounded by plants, grass and green right now yet it’s so much easier than in London

asthmashmasthma · 22/06/2024 21:20

@BashfulClam let's try and make it the new fashion! Haha

@UprootedSunflower no we live semi rurally. We're about 40 minutes from the nearest city and live next to massive open fields. But we do have a town about 10 mins away. This has been the worst year yet for his hayfever though. However I did suffer terribly as a child and ended up in hospital most years due to extreme facial swelling so I'm guessing some of it is probably hereditary!

Friends Kids GIF by Storyful

Oh bless him. I'd be inclined to at least ring for more advice if he's no better on the suggested regime.

My hayfever has been terrible these past two years. I'm blaming no-mow may which seems to have morphed into no-mow entire fucking summer with grass hedge and tree seeds running riot.

Lalog · 22/06/2024 21:22

No idea where that gif came from, sorry!

asthmashmasthma · 22/06/2024 21:23

@Lalog yes I definitely think that makes a difference.
I'm going to see how he goes as he's finally fallen asleep and has stopped sucking in at the neck and ribs so the inhaler is obviously starting to work. Hopefully it stays like that through the night and he won't need anything else

I’m better in the city. I live in the Scottish countryside and it kills me every summer. Even my skin and throat itches.
