Theft at workplace

Son works in a large NHS hospital, he does a manual/logistics job in the hospital for 12 hour shifts, 4 on/4 off. He took clothes and trainers to work today so he could shower there after his shift and go to his girlfriends after. All his clothes + trainers, backpack, wallet (with about £40 cash) house keys, total value of about £500 were stolen from the staff changing rooms which is the only place for staff to keep their personal belongings in the day. There were no lockers available. One item, a beanie hat, was designer and had sentimental value as a gift. My son is absolutely devasted about this particular, for context he is diagnosed ASD so can be very sensitive.

I know his work place wont act, but is it worth reporting to the police?

Can he report it to site security? There might be CCTV covering the changing room door. I'd start there, if you get anywhere, then contact police

Absolutely report this theft to the police.

AngelDelightButNotStrawberry · 22/06/2024 20:38

I work for the NHS and have known this happen far too often.

I do also remember one parent stole a nurse’s lunch one shift as we caught them eating it. People steal anything.

Definitely report to the police! If someone is stealing from other staff members then what’s to say they aren’t stealing from vulnerable patients too. It’s disgusting.

a relative works in an nhs hospital and one of the junior doctors had a laptop stolen from a staff room!

Surely lockers should be provided for staff belongings can't believe they don't have them

Funkyslippers · 22/06/2024 21:27

How awful for him. Definitely report to.the police

That’s shit!

biggest bugbear are thieves and liars.

ds got a brand new jumper wore it to work and someone stole it!

he needs to report it and all staff should request lockers.

ToxicChristmas · 22/06/2024 21:35

That's shit, I'm really sorry for him. Definitely report to the police, although I highly doubt they will do anything at all. Not having lockers available is very poor. When I worked in HR, if all the lockers were gone in the changing rooms (rare as we had loads) I used to keep people's personal items in the office which I could lock. I don't think it's acceptable for staff to have no options to secure their items, especially if they are not allowed to carry wallets and phones on them while working.

Believe it. Quite often a staff room is a small clock room, if you're really lucky there might be one row of lockers, and if you're really, really luck some of those lockers might actually have locks, and then if you're super lucky the locks actually work!

theres 12 lockers, but people use them permanently, and take the key home, so there no available for vast majority of staff on a daily basis

I know the police wont get his stuff back, but i feel it should be reported

We have lockers with keys.

AngelDelightButNotStrawberry · 23/06/2024 06:47

Believe there aren’t lockers. I don’t have one, where I work there aren’t any.
