Tupperware storage: lids on or off?

HaveSomeIntrospect · 22/06/2024 14:20

Aibu to store my tipper with the lids on?
it takes up a lot of room but I’m sick of boxes and lids being separated and going missing.

What are everyone’s thoughts please?

Definitely on as I can't be bothered to dig around for lids , but I don't press them on as I find they smell.

Midlifecryses · 22/06/2024 14:33

Off because of the smell. Same with flasks and water bottles

Nanaboots · 22/06/2024 14:33

I don’t leave them on I think it makes them smell. I bought a storage box big enough to hold all the lids, then stack the empty containers kept them like this for the last 5 years or so, and is the best way I have come up with

ScotttCheggg · 22/06/2024 14:40

The smell when you eventually remove the lid makes me gag, so definitely lid off!

dudsville · 22/06/2024 14:43

Mine don't smell, maybe ours are into a very quick rotation. I put the lids on. It's better use of space to have storre without lids, but it's a pita to look for the right lid.

Invisimamma · 22/06/2024 15:03

Lids on!

They don't smell if they are properly cleaned and dry before you store them. If they smell it's bacteria build up and you don't want to be storing food in that!

mondaytosunday · 22/06/2024 15:04

I stack them inside each other so off, but I have limited storage so couldn't do them on anyway.

TheSandgroper · 22/06/2024 15:14

My lids are off for stacking and then filed in a lunchbox in the drawer corner.

L1ttledrummergirl · 22/06/2024 15:15

Lids off or they smell funky.

mogtheexcellent · 22/06/2024 15:17

Lids on and keep what you have to minimum so not taking up lots of space. Cant say I have ever noticed a smell though.

spikeandbuffy · 22/06/2024 15:26

Off. But I bought Pyrex ones with plastic lids, best thing I've bought for the kitchen
I can portion from batch cooking or make individual lasagne/cottage pie etc and freeze, then microwave or air fryer to reheat

Mnetcurious · 22/06/2024 15:30

Off. I have a storage box in the cupboard just for tubs and a separate box just for lids, it works well and never takes long to find a matching pair.

tiggergoesbounce · 22/06/2024 15:48

Definitely not being unreasonable to store with lids on, I very much dislike the lid hunt. So I store mine with lids on.

SprigatitoYouAndIKnow · 22/06/2024 15:51

Off to keep the air circulating and don't want bacteria growing there. Especially if any dampness might be trapped inside. I regularly lose lids though, so there is a downside.

ViaRia01 · 22/06/2024 15:56

I had a sort out today and put all lids back on so that they stack nicely and don’t all tumble out of the cupboard as soon as you open it. The cupboard has unfortunately become quite full though (not surprisingly as I’m storing many boxes of air in there) and will probably have to resort to lid off storage soon, when my Tupperware collection expands

The trick is to wash, dry, leave on the counter open overnight before lidding and storing. The smell is ehen they have been slightly damp.

I store specific clip tubs lid on and then I have loads of takeaway containers stacked without lids but in a box with the lids stacked in the same box.

DoublePeonies · 22/06/2024 16:08

Lids off!!!
They stack better, and don't tumble out of the cupboard when you open the door.

Omg what a great tip. Why did I not think of that. Mine are in a box with lids on but half the time they come off and get mixed up.

WeRateSquirrels · 22/06/2024 16:13

Always on, having made sure they’re properly dry. Have never lost a lid.

ImCamembertTheBigCheese · 22/06/2024 16:17

Lids off. Not heard of any other way. Easier to stack and store.

Campestris · 22/06/2024 16:18

Lids off but I use a magazine file to store all the lids vertically upright. It generally works quite well for me and I don't have too much trouble matching.

Riversideandrelax · 22/06/2024 16:21

The 'tupperware' I use are glass with bamboo lids. I keep them with lids on. So much easier to grab than keeping lids and bottoms separate.

The only reason people stack in my opinion is because they have far too much, imo. Hence reply about them falling out the cupboard! I have 4 bigger containers and 2 smaller.

I do also have a couple of the fold down plastic containers that I can put in the freezer. Also one set of nesting plastic containers I use for packed lunches. Both kept with lids on.

I think the 'eventually' may be your issue. If you only have a few that are washed and dried properly there is no smell even with plastic ones, although most of mine are glass. The problem though with plastic is it will retain the smell so if they smell I'd bin them.

HaveSomeIntrospect · 22/06/2024 19:27

Okay,
so any random boxes and Lisa are gone.
the ones that are remaining at thoroughly dry so, lids on but in a large bag (like the blue ikea ones) so that they all fit. In a large pantry cupboard so loads of room 🤞🤞🤞

Most of my containers are glass (borosilicate). I have some small plastic ones that I store with lids on but they are rotated quickly.
