It's tickets, not bloody tix

It drives me up the wall. I've seen it on here this morning. Win tix for XYZ, just stop it.

I must live under a rock 😂, I’ve never seen tix or most of the x abbreviations mentioned here before and wouldn’t automatically link tix to tickets.

Is it a tictok/instagram thing?

Well, context helps a hell of a lot.
It's not beyond comprehension that pax means passengers in context of airlines etc. and it is more common than the Latin term pax.

Well it is beyond comprehension. If I was going to shorten passenger I would do pgr not pax far more logical

I have no idea what these abbreviations mean so not clearly understood

Pax means peace to me

Edited

Tbf @ASighMadeOfStone said "clearly understood by anyone who needs to", ergo someone who works in relevant industries and uses these abbreviations every day in professional documentation.

You clearly don't, so don't need to understand them.

But that would be beyond comprehension...I'd read that as pager.

Pax has been in use for decades and it is quite common to use X as an abbreviation ...so it's just one of those quirks of language

@llamajohn@MonsteraMama

I consider myself thick and well and truly told off

Howdoesitworkagain · 22/06/2024 13:17

Who are all these people getting so worked up about which abbreviations other people
use 🤣

I hate x as any form of abbreviation. Pax for passengers, dx for diagnosed. It's lazy unless there is a need to save space on a document for some reason.

Airlines use pax
Doctors use dx

I had a text saying tix sent to me in 2004 so not originally no.

Don't be silly @slimshady18 of course I know it's an abbreviation. And one I hate and that is totally unnecessary. Just used in order to look cool, and it fails.

There is a board specifically for people like us. Head over to Pedants Corner. 👍

I've had to learn morse code to read some threads and sometimes I still don't understand what they say.
Have to go through the comments to figure it out.

I bet OP’s fine with them because they’re used by the middle class.

OP, stop the sneering and get a life.

See this is what I don't get about Mumsnet sometimes. There's a forum to ask if you're unreasonable about something. And some of the replies are very often nasty and unreasonable in themselves and out of proportion to the original question, make assumptions (like this one) and give people an opportunity to be spiteful and gang up about something innocuous.

I worked in aviation and PAX is used to save space on the system including the short messaging system within the aircraft that pilots use to communicate with the ground. Absolutely zero to do with laziness!!

Paul McCartneys Dad told him he loved the song, but couldn't he sing "She loves you, yes, yes, yes" as he hated "Yeah"!

Language evolves. Why let it bother you?

moonshinepoursthroughmywindow · 22/06/2024 18:04

I understand that it's an abbreviation but it's not one I use myself (yet).

Tix is a Norwegian musician.
