Families shopping together

Do entire families need to do their grocery shopping together? See both parents, 4 kids and another relative (grandparent, aunt etc). It does not need 7 people do a shop.

Clog up the aisles, kids demanding that they want this and that and kids running around. Shops are not playgrounds!

Grocery shopping isn’t a hobby, it’s a chore!

Oh my god her children are badly socialised because she didn't take them shopping and out to eat! What was she thinking!

I had to go this morning, whilst navigating the masses I overheard someone declaring 'who goes shopping on a Saturday, madness!' Well clearly you do!!!

I agree with that person, tbh, when it’s in relation to someone who doesn’t have to shop on Saturdays — my mother, who has been retired for 15 years, still insists on shopping on Saturday mornings, despite then complaining endlessly about the crowds and depleted shelves.

I absolutely agree, I loath going which is why we get a delivery once a week but I find it madness people treat it as a day out, especially as they always look stressed whilst there!

Don’t you get it OP. Not everyone has the money for holidays , hobby’s and days out. For Some families shopping really is a social event

I'm retired and usually avoid Saturdays for my own convenience. Today I had to go out and get a few things anyway and why shouldn't I? My money is as good as anyone else's.

Although I find it irritating sometimes when whole families shop together and personally couldn't think of anything worse, I remind myself that it's none of my business, it's a good skill to teach children and for some families on a limited budget, it's their one outing per week to spend money, therefore they all get involved.

Why do children have to be on scooters in a smallish supermarket though or any shop for that matter

I encountered this today

That's why the kids are screaming and yelling and whining, because they are having "fun".

Children range from 0-18 years and have many different personalities.

My 2.5 year old asks to go to the shops and hold the bag of carrots etc. Sometimes he screams because he's 2.

As a kid shops were fun, Costco, ikea, big supermarkets if you were allowed to choose something.

Whereas being dragged around the shops when you're starving or would rather be at the park on a sunny day is not fun.

It's not really that hard to grasp.

You were making a reasonable point until you added the silly patronising bit at the end.

Anyway the point is surely that if your kids like it, it's not so bad but why have a family outing when you know your children will scream the place down and give everyone a headache.

And the idea of Costco being fun. [shudders]

I remember having to go to DIY stores on occasion. I was soooooo bored. But I didn't kick off because I wasn't allowed to. I also wasn't 2.

In terms of kids obviously not enjoying it because they are crying/screaming: I have seen lots of crying screaming children at the farm/theme park/beach- sometimes kids have a tantrum even if they do like somewhere

It doesn't sound like you agree with what I said at all lol...

Your mother is the typical elderly customer that winds up working aged customers and shop staff.

ooh it’s busy!

what do you expect from shopping the busiest time of the week?

I agree.

I leave the kids in the car with DH, online shop or go when the children are sleeping and dh is at home.

I hate shopping with my own children so wouldn't subject other people to them!

notedbiscuits · 22/06/2024 21:01

It’s the random high pitched/very loud screaming that some toddlers make with no input from parent(s) to stop making those noises that annoy me.

See in the faces of the staff when the kid finally leaves the shops and thinking ‘thank the fuck they left’

Anywherebuthere · 22/06/2024 21:07

I think it's a good idea to go shopping as a family sometimes

It's a good opportunity to teach young children how to shop/budget/organise and so on as well spend time together.

I don’t like grocery shopping online as get rubbish dates - 3 days on 4 pints of milk, bruised fruit and no hunting for reduced stickers. The yellow stickers is the fun part.

The online pickers don’t have time to pick longer dates, nicer looking fruit as got targets as my friend’s DD used to be one

Get the bilk8 if your shopping delivered, and get the bits you're fussy about, in person. You have no greater right to the supermarket than anyone else.

skyandocean · 22/06/2024 23:50

Gosh some of these people on here! Shops are not just for you bloody good for nothing adults! It's important kids go and experience shopping too, what do you want us to do, build a cave at home and shove them in there whilst we go out and shop??
I don't particularly choose to take my kids, but sometimes we have no choice but now that I know there's freaks out there that don't enjoy seeing families shop, I will make it more of a habit to take them.

That poster that referred to families as feral for doing so, you are the feral and obvs was brought up amongst the likes

Auburngal · 23/06/2024 20:28

At my store, we get groups of 3-4 friends coming in together with 5-7 kids, some in pushchairs just to buy one item!

There is no need for 8-11 people to come together to buy baby wipes and clog up the self scans
