Fibreglass on skin - halp!

Gave some chairs a big clean this morning and then realised that I am now literally covered in fibreglass. It’s embedded in my hands, legs and arms and already really painful

i have already tried

  • washing (had a shower)
  • using tape to get it out
  • a face scrub that I have all over my skin

it’s still all over me (I can see it glittering and I look a bit like a vampire from Twighlight). Any other ideas to either get more of it out - or at least stop it feeling so painful.

The face scrub doesn't sound like a good idea. I'm hoping you haven't rubbed your skin with it?
Unless it's long fibers that can be tweezered out, I would think the best thing you can do at this point is a long hot bath, mild soap, and a proper emollient on it, and most of all stop touching, your skins going to get very sore.

Back in the good old bad old days we used mild soap and hot water, and poured vinegar over the affected areas (stings sharply if skins broken) then washed the vinegar off with cool water and lived with it until the rash went down.

Tights! I know this sounds mad, but a warm shower and tights, rub all over for a good 30 minutes.

Waxing affected areas with wax strips? But... ouch.

I only said shower in case you don’t have a bath. The idea would be a warm bath with salt and then stay in there for half an hour and rub tights all over. I don’t know why it works but it does and it’s a tip I got from someone who works in construction and used to have this as an everyday hazard.

Christ, that sounds awful.

Did you clean the chairs outside? I've seen horror stories of people who've cleaned matresses etc indoors and contaminated all their possessions with it. Don't want you to finally get it off you and then get re-covered in it from your clothes / bedsheets or something.

My granny got tiny glass shards out of my hand by soaking it in very hot salty water, the skin would plump up and she'd tweezer it out. She was a nurse.

Sounds awful for you.

We were on holiday once abroad sat on some flaking cafe style seats one evening. We all wound up with fibreglass in our skin.

Both tights and fabric softening sheets supposedly attract fiberglass shards, but I have never personally tried either, but I'm fairly sure the game is to stroke them over the skin not rub. I wouldn't be rubbing anything against fiberglass on skin.
