Boring brother in law (lighthearted!)

I live in a tourist area and so family and friends always want to visit. Not got a problem with it, we have spare bedrooms and I like showing them all the places of interest, as we get days out too!
last week, my husband’s wife and her husband came, for a week.
I’ve only really met him before at weddings or other family events, so only a few hours at a time. So to have him for a week……!

he is quite well travelled. He likes to make sure everyone knows this….. he is the “been there, done that, bought the t-shirt etc” for all the places. If you have been to one of said places, he did it bigger and better than you. Any conversation about anything was peppered with “well when we were in Philadelphia/Iceland/Istanbul/Timbuctoo…”. After a couple of days of this it was getting wearing!
During any conversation, he had to literally take over….. and even when we were trying to watch a little bit of tv, he talked over it, and about nothing!!! Eg, as it was warm I served ice cream after tea one evening- thus followed a 10 minute “speech” about all the different ice cream flavours, where he’d had them, which brand was best……and so on! I zoned out after the first minute!
Honestly, I think he qualifies as the most boring relative I have…. Anyone else got one? How do you deal with them?

You’re very generous, hosting your husband’s wife 😉

KimberleyClark · 20/06/2024 14:30

Perhaps she means his ex wife. Still nice of her to host though!

Oops! It was my husband’s sister and her husband!

Neurodiverse maybe.

Lord he sounds like a pain ! Could you ask your husband to have a quiet word with his sister?

Irishmama100 · 20/06/2024 15:25

Oh god he sounds a right pain. So you went to Tenerife and he went to Elevenerife type.
My teenager can be one for going on and on about things. We really try to teach him
the art of conversation, as it is an art and we all can be guilty of bringing the conversation back to ourselves. I am also seriously talkative but I have to remind myself that I have two ears and one mouth and I need to use them proportionally!
When they next schedule a visit, give your apologies and say you are going to Elevenerife🤣🤣🤣

Lol - how could you say it? Not an easy conversation of tell him to shut up as he is boring us all to death. It's annoying these types never pick up on social cues - I can't bear people who deliver monologues instead of realising conversations are dialogues
