How can I get a peice of it?

I live in a very wealthy area (abroad)
Multimillion pound properties, beautiful cars, boats etc
I see so much of it around me, what work/business can I do to access some of it?
So sick of working my arse off in what used to be a very satisfying and worthwhile profession, but just isn’t anymore.
I’m degree educated and have a fair amount of motivation

You need to find out what niches these locals are successful in and that would suit you. Why not ask around? Some niches need no specific qualifications too.

Dreamingoftheolddays · 19/06/2024 14:55

Well, they all have businesses, some own multiple restaurants etc, the rest I’ve no idea how they made their money

Gingerdancedbackwards · 19/06/2024 23:27

Only fans?
Who knows? Do you have qualifications in anything?
Learn a new skill?
Open a restaurant?
Marry a very rich person?
Only you know why you are not rich

Triskeline · 19/06/2024 23:30

Wouldn’t it be easier to live somewhere where you’re not so tormented by the sight of other people’s yachts?

MidnightPatrol · 19/06/2024 23:32

What profession are you in / experience do you have?

Having a degree doesn’t necessarily point to anything.

trekking1 · 19/06/2024 23:49

They own their own businesses, that's the trick. No one has ever gotten rich working for someone else. Do you have any knowledge or skills that could be useful in starting a business?

This! I’m in the same position and can’t wait to get out of here to find some normalcy- whatever that is.

PippyLongTits · 20/06/2024 00:07

Euromillions is £146m this week 🤞🍀

Lovepeaceunderstanding · 20/06/2024 00:14

@Dreamingoftheolddays , you need to identify a need you can fulfil. You will probably have to take risks which mean you could lose it all. You’ll likely need to raise significant funds but you’ll definitely have to work your socks off at the expense of your personal time.
Good luck! If against all the odds you succeed and spend your life living prudently then if you live in the U.K. be prepared for everything you worked and saved for to be savaged to pay for the workshy. I hope you have no issue as I do not in paying towards those in genuine need.

If it’s Dubai or Marbella that you live then it’s crime. Get onto something criminal and the millions will soon pile in to your bank account.

fao · 20/06/2024 00:19

@Onand Does that mean Dubai and Marbella are full of criminals (and dangerous ones)?

DejectedRejected · 20/06/2024 00:33

If it’s uk most will be some form of inherited wealth and or some financial or business enterprise. We lived in one of those villages and moved because the disparity made us outsiders forever. We’re longtime public servants with zero family money.

SlothOnARope · 20/06/2024 00:34

Apart from the few that are actually self made industrialists or brain surgeons, a lot of the others will not have acquired all that pointless wealth through their own hard work.

Being a useless sleb in whatever field, hedge fund or asset management, running gambling websites, drug production or smuggling, making modern art for corporate money laundering. Property deals on the fringes of legality. Running an illegal non taxpaying business inside a legal one. Gentrified organised crime. Anything that takes from the world way more than it gives or exploits a human weakness.

I'm happy not to be one of those people, anyway the rising sea levels and tectonic plates don't care how big their mansions are.

That's not true at all 🤷‍♀️

Bishboshboom · 20/06/2024 00:42

Honestly? Move somewhere where you are already rich.

The more money you have, the more you suffer lifestyle inflation, so you need to earn more to support the living expenses and don't feel you have much left over.

By all means launch a business etc. but don't do it to buy all that crap. Do it to help people.

Isn't it a criterion for entry to Marbs?!

it'svery unusual for a brain-surgeon not to be self-made. And even more unusual for them to be millionaires.

Interesting that you believe wealth can only be earned nefariously. Sounds as if you obtained your list of criminal jobs from a true crime series on channel 5

decionsdecisions62 · 20/06/2024 04:27

I think if it was that easy. You post on Mumsnet and voila you're a millionaire then we would all have a yatch!

My old school friend that's a multimillionaire was hopeless at school but he started a business. He is driven and has multiple homes globally, private jet etc. He did employ some of his school mates and one or two are also very wealthy now.

You don't just need an idea you need a range of factors to work in your benefit and the fact that you are having to ask here points to me you don't posses the required skill set!

Bishboshboom · 20/06/2024 05:44

The other way to millionaire-dom is to spend less. If you saved 200 a month from the age of 18 for 50 years, and invested it in a global tracker using the ISA allowance, assuming an interest rate of 8% which is pretty representative of the last 30 years you would have over 1.5m by official retirement of 68. You could then live off the interest of that forever and spend 60k a year if you skimmed of 4% . Adding state pension of 11k and assuming no housing costs you would have 71k a year which is extremely wealthy. Plus you'd still have 1.5m to pass on to children. The average person doesn't do that nor do they have any emergency savings and are instead in debt spending money on unnecessary things to impress people they don't know or even like because of Social media influencers.

Multi millionaires also do even go bankrupt and lose everything. I've seen it multiple times happen to friends I went to school with.

"Pointless wealth"? So you don't like money, and probably people who have or talk about money. Some people do like money, though, and are striving towards it.

That's just not true.
The richest people I know are incredibly bright but (crucially) are fantastic communicators. They have been promoted throughout their careers and now senior management / partners earning well over £250k plus bonus, have fantastic pensions and sensible investments.
They started off their careers doing their aca (accounting) and gone on from there.
Most of the people I know who own their own businesses don't earn nearly as much (obviously there are exceptions). But then only make their money if they have a viable business to sell. But even if you sell a business for a few million - it's not the same level of sustained and secure wealth that those working in finance make throughout their (usually) long careers.

Maddy70 · 20/06/2024 06:46

Maybe address why you feel envious of them?. I also live abroad in a wealthy area surrounded by yachts etc. I've never once felt envious. I feel the luckiest person to be able to be here. Despite having serious health issues etc

You're using figures going back then projecting the same assumed growth forward for a tax free wrapping that didn't exist 50 years ago and may not exist going forward. Hence problematic.

@SlothOnARope do you understand how fund managers make their money? They have a small basic and then make the rest on commission, so a small percentage of the money that they make for other people on the stock market.
