My son has had three days of school this school year. One for a close family members funeral and two days off with a stomach bug. The weekend before last he came down with what we thought was a bad cold which got progressively worse.
At the weekend we called 111 and saw an out of hours doctor. He said he had a crackly right lung, swollen tonsils and a mouth full of ulcers. He is gradually getting better now he has antibiotics but still at home. I have informed the school and have just received a voicemail asking me to call the school. I suffer with anxiety and am
Now worried that we will be monitored for non attendance or something. He has always had excellent attendance and this is the most I'll he has ever been. His attendance has dropped tonight 95% due to having all of last week and Monday Tuesday of this week. Please put my mind at ease. I

Do you mean he's had three days off school or three days of school?

shellyleppard · 18/06/2024 14:51

Op I would assume they are just checking up. The fact that you had to ring 111 and go to hospital proves he was really ill x

Okay, sorry. I see what you mean now.

If he's been genuinely ill, what can they do? It's not like he's been off for weeks on holiday.

Try not to worry.

Moveoverdarlin · 18/06/2024 14:52

They won’t be worried about his attendance if this is his fifth day off since September. An attendance of 95% is fine. I imagine they’re just checking in, my school ring to say ‘if he’s been sick we can’t have him back in for 48 hours or whatever it is. Or to check it’s not Covid / chicken pox or anything else sinister.’

Ring them back and tell them how he is.

Homesweethome23 · 18/06/2024 14:52

3 days off school for the year is hardly anything I wouldn’t worry as he is genuinely unwell.

My child currently has 65% attendance for the year due to medical problems and I have not had one phone call from them. It’s been me letting them know what the problem is.

PuttingDownRoots · 18/06/2024 14:53

They probably just need to see evidence of the doctors visit.

Its safeguarding.

AlltheFs · 18/06/2024 14:54

I am sure it is more of a safeguarding check than an attendance issue. They are meant to check on kids they haven’t seen for a while.

Poor boy and I'm sure a huge worry for you too. Schools have trigger points for attendance and probably hitting 95% is one of them. It will most likely be a supportive phone call, and done out of a duty of care. Schools have had a big push recently to prevent children 'missing in education' and this will be a tick box exercise from their end. School staff will totally understand and appreciate him being unwell and I assure you they won't want him back in the classroom whilst still this unwell.
Please try not to worry - 99% of the time schools just have the child's best interest at heart and want to work with parents and not against them.

Scirocco · 18/06/2024 14:56

95% attendance is good, and all his absences are for valid reasons, so it'll just be a routine call to confirm he's ill.

Readysteadygoo · 18/06/2024 15:31

They are probably just wanting to check in and see how he is doing, and when he is expected to be back. Nothing to worry about and 95% attendance is fine!
